Flavor of the lemonquat rind
« on: May 23, 2022, 03:31:36 AM »
How is the flavor of the rind of a lemonquat. I read elsewhere that it is not a hybrid between a Meyer lemon and a kumquat but between a mandarin and a kumquat. For me it is only interesting if it has a true lemony flavor in the rind.

I just scraped, smelled, and ate the rind of a sunquat I had sitting in my fridge (it is not really fresh anymore, been in there a month)

The rind is slightly lemony, but much less so than any true lemon or citron I've tried.  I don't detect any hint of the Meyer scent, it is simply "very weak lemon" rather than "something other than lemon" scent/taste, like some other kumquat hybrids the skin is rather bland instead of sweet like you might hope.

Overall the fruit is a poor substitute for a lemon, however if no lemons were available I think people would be thrilled to have it.  But if you can get true lemons don't bother.

I never tasted a Lemonquat.  I did have a Sunquat some years ago.  It was not worth keeping and tossed it out on the compost pile.

I agree. Sunquat rind tasted like eating perfume/soap. Still haven't tossed it yet tho.

Took me 4 years to get a single fruit from my Harris Sunquat.

53 ounces. 9 segments, 2 seeds
Good orange flavour, plenty of juice, not very sweet. Peel thin and somewhat bitter.
I didn't get anything lemony from it. Still a young plant, of course.

I wonder if other sources are different hybrids and thus more lemony?

They should all be identical genetically, though there is sure to be some difference with growing conditions and age.

Do you mean 53 grams??
