What should my next addition be?
« on: September 10, 2022, 12:59:12 PM »
Hi, long time lurker and first time poster.

First off, thanks everyone for pulling me back into this weird exotic fruit hobby that has taken over all my other hobbies lol. It wouldn't have been possible without these discussions remaining alive and people continuing to share their knowledge.

Anyway, I have amassed quite the collection since my first visit to this website, and I'm wondering if any veterans know of some suggestions to further my collection (popular or lesser known, I really don't care but of course I'm partial to rare fruit, taste is king for me though)

I've had my eyes on the Abiu and Abiurana for a while, Abiu is easier to come by, I know there are some people in the forums that sell the seeds but before I pulled the trigger I just wanted to know other people's thoughts :)

My current collection:
- Red Sugar Apple
- Purple Sugar Apple
- Atemoya
- Rainforest Plum
- Jaboticaba
- Blue Grape
- Uvaia do Campo
- Bolivian Mangosteen
- Cuban Mangosteen
- Mexican Mangosteen
- Lemon Drop Mangosteen
- Jambu
- Granadilla
- Feijoa

Thanks everyone! I'm not the biggest berry fan personally; my favorite kind of fruit is mango if that helps with any suggestions.
Greatly appreciate everything! And if you have a rare fruit that you just want to talk about, I always love to learn. Doesn't have to a suggestion <3

Nice collection, but why are you not growing mango, if that is your favorite?

well I actually am, I just included the more tropical varieties that seem to pique these forum's interest a bit more. + I don't really know much about different varieties of mango, I just recognize some of the well known ones.

If you want the total list (... drumroll please)
- Lychee
- Mango
- Honeydew
- Watermelon
- Cantaloupe
- Dragonfruit
- Strawberry Guava
- Andean Guava
- Cream Guava
- Strawberries
- Blueberries
- Honeyberries
- Passionfruit
- Pomegranate
- Mysore Raspberry
- + all the listed above

As you can see, things have gotten quite out of hand  ;D

Welcome to the forum!

I think half of the addiction is wanting something new.
How many times do I tell myself one more tree will do it
Just one more tree

you do have a great collection already!
You don't like avocados?
That is something that is not exotic but I really enjoy
eating. Longans are nice in Florida. They fruit after the lychees
and are more consistent producers. And lastly one of my favorite
fruits is a sugarlata which is a cross between sugar apple and custard apple

My dad actually grew avocados commercially when I was a kid, I never acquired the taste for them I suppose. I've been tempted to start a longan, if I'm not mistaken I see them + lychee and rambutan all the time at my local asian grocery store. I'm not sure which I enjoy more, surprising myself with the new fruit or surprising others that would never in a million years gotten a chance to try them. I spent an embarrassing amount of time growing elephant ears, not knowing how amazing the tubers underneath were.

Sometimes it's easy to forget that there is more waiting out there, be it rarity, time, or not commercially 'viable' enough to ever see in a store. Or maybe I played too many pokemon games as a kid

Cool that you are growing mangos in TX, what varieties grow well there? You might want to look at sapodilla, jackfruit, the sapote family, black, white, green, ross, etc. I agree with Mike, avo's for sure, who knows you may learn to like them.

Any mango that can withstand a bit of cold will grow just fine where I'm at; I think the most well known is kent, keitt, irwin. As long as you prepare for the winter freezes they thrive in the summer sun, and if you have a greenhouse it's no trouble at all. Only problem nowadays is the drought, but we just got some water finally
