Is anyone growing Mammee Apple?
« on: November 23, 2022, 06:59:00 AM »
Is anyone growing Mammee Apple? I have a couple seedlings I plan on putting in the ground next spring. I've gathered it's cold sensitive, though read on Pine Island Nursery's website that its damage temp is 30°.

Any insight as to container culture?

We've had the fruit on a couple occasions at the Fruit & Spice Park and it was an immediate favorite. I'm hoping to grow my very own.

Any insight on growing this tree would be much appreciated, especially zone-pushing and container-growing perspectives.

Thanks!

We are growing many mammee apple trees. The fruit makes an excellent jam.

Couldn't be of much use in terms of cold sensitivity advice though sorry.

They are beautiful trees.

Try to get a freestone variety if you can.

I grafted one of the free stone types from Dr. Campbell's collection.
Jinotepe #2 supposedly.
The tree is around 20ft now, not flowers yet

Apparently there are individuals that have only male flowers. It’s called sapote domingo in Mexico.

Thanks for the responses!

Peter, are you growing them?

skhan, 20 feet and no flowers? Yikes. How old is the tree? Is it on Mammee Apple rootstock? Do you plan on pruning to control size?

Vegan Potato Grower, are your trees all grafted? How long did they take to fruit?

Hopefully more people will chime in--I'm surprised it's not more popular?

Thanks!

Yes, we are growing Mamey apple. I have an old seedling tree that is in a rather shady area and another one that is grafted. It’s native to CR and you can see the fruits for sale in season by the roadside. I have never noticed much difference in quality and I’ve never had what I would describe as freestone either.
It’s a nice fruit to have in production and it is commercial but I wouldn’t really commit to trying to sell a lot of it.

My "Redlands" variety airlayered tree fruited for the first time this year after 9 years in the ground. I got 3 runts. The tree has been flowering for at least 4 years. I think your chances of fruiting in a container are low.  I have been told seedlings tend to be males.

Check with Lara farms, I don’t see any on the site for sale but I spoke to Julian earlier in the year and he had both free stone, and cling types for sale.

Wow, thanks for a lot of info I didn't want to hear, cbss_daviefl😂😭

At the very least, if these do well enough in 10a, I can always try to get scions later on??

When is the season in Costa Rica, Peter? We're hoping to visit Costa Rica at some point.

Thanks again!
