I'll be intrigued by the array of avocado varieties you cultivate in California.

Last year, I reached out to several nurseries in search of Russell avocados, yet surprisingly, many nurseries in LA or San Diego were unaware of this particular variety's existence.

Surprise me, please!

With the UC Riverside germplasm access, and orange county crfg grafting and selling those, there is a ton of Avocado's to grow in CA.
Brad has detailed some of the best ones for inland So Cal on the forum. A couple of my favorites I have grown or tried are Don gillogoly, Pinkerton and Jan Boyce. Sharwil's are also spectacular .

This is my Reed avocado, maybe 3 -4 years old and this is its second year blooming. Last year, it had few flowers but this year it has barely any leaves but flowers.
Reed and Hass avocados are truly productive. Once you've secured an ample supply of avocados for your family, you might consider exploring more exotic and unique varieties.

Do you still have Don Gillogoly or Jan Boyce? I am planning to get Pinkerton. How was your Pinkerton, in terms of productivity and taste? Where are you located?

Jan Boyce is one of my favorites, but Hellen is even better with flavor and size.

I heard about Hellen. Since you like it I should consider getting at least one. I was thinking of getting two Pinkerton but now I will get just one and get one Hellen. Thank you for your input.

Pinkerton is great too.  Julie Frink suggested Hellen.

Jack, glad to hear you also like the Hellen, just got a grafted plant from Julie at our plant sale (CRFG). The little plant has lots of flowers so I will cut them off now.

Elijah, not many people have the Russell from what I heard when I asked here.

But I have it grafted now on my tree, here's how nice the fruits look.

My graft looks good, maybe in 2 years I will have one of these giant fruits on my tree. Also grafted a lot of Marcus Pumpkin scions from Dan and Mike.

Has anyone heard of a Tyson Seedless avocado? I'm grafting that one now. I heard it was from Top Tropicals. The tree I got the cuttings from is a large one, it flowers but no fruits yet.

That Russell looks amazing. I bought a Russell tree from Florida and died. I am not planning to buy any trees from Florida or Puerto Rico for a while. I cannot say 'Never" though  ;D

I think that is a true rarest avocado.

Did you see anyone selling Maluma avocado at the CRFG plant sale?

I started a tree of 'Royal Wright' this year with scions I bought from Marta at Really Good Plants. It's on fuerte or zutano rootstock and growing like a beast! The shape looks kind of like a Russell which I have so will see when it fruits. Wanted a 'Second Red' avocado that she found in Santa Rosa but haven't gotten it yet! Also have a 'Palo d' Oro" from Epic Tree Nursery that I got scion wood from them and made a tree will see on that one when it fruits from some valley in Big Sur.

I also have the Royal Wright grafted but on a small seedling so not growing as fast as yours Robert. Make sure you post your photo of the Russell fruit when it has it, I will do the same with my grafted Russell which is from a huge tree in Hawaii that is to old so they have cut it down and only a stump now. Lucky the stump still has some small shoots for me to get for grafting. I grafted the Second Red last month, already growing out so when it branches more this year, I can send you a cutting for a white sapote cutting.

This is off topic, but what does Sapote taste like? I haven't had the desire to try it before, but since it was mentioned, I'd like to know at least what it tastes like.

You need to try one, it is difficult to describe it since it doesn't taste like other fruits. But I read it mentioned that the texture is like custard, to me a little firmer than yogurt I like to eat in the morning. The taste is like banana and peach. It is pretty sweet, much more flavor than an avocado. It usually has 1-4 large seeds in the middle, but there is plenty of flesh to eat. The one I showed above is a large fruit at 1lb, should be full after eating just one.

If you like the texture of avocado and banana then white sapote is in that range. You eat it with a spoon, I remove the seeds, then scoop it up like a yogurt. Let me delete the previous photos above. You can delete your copy of my photos as well.

ok, sounds good. Yes, I would like to see any fruits you get on the Russell. The person who has the old tree in Hawaii may not know for 100% sure that it is a Russell but that is what they said. It's been growing there for a long time.

Are they producing fruits? If so, which one is your favorite in terms of taste and productivity?

Pinkerton has produced last year. I did not let any of them fruit as I wanted to focus on growth.

I'm not an avocado person however, in terms of taste of the 4 i rate in Nabal, sharwill, jan boyce & pinkerton last of the ones I have.
