Suebelle vs Vernon White Sapote
« on: May 19, 2024, 03:17:09 PM »
Wondering which of these two varieties to go for. Ideally I’d go with one of the other more recommended varieties but can’t seem to find any available to purchase at the moment.

Of the ones I do see available these two seem like the best candidates. Any thoughts and opinions on which to go for?

I follow Fruitopia on YouTube and he has nearly all the White Sapotes; he claims they are all very similar and has lots of good videos to show their potential. I heard campbell sapote is really nice as well but they are all sold out. I been checking weekly

I have both subelle and vernon, cant go wrong with either. Taste is similar. I have vernon as rootstock and subelle grafted.

I think Vernon grows more vigorous, Suebell is dwarf.

If size matters, here Vernon fruit is much larger than Suebelle.  As mentioned, Suebelle is a much smaller tree than Vernon (and fuzzy underleaves and possibly a hybrid between Casimiroa edulis and Casimiroa tetrameria-yellow sapote)

Vernon has bigger fruit and taste profile is richer in my opinion.

Looks like there are a few Campbell back in stock as of right now if you're still looking.

Literally just seen that prior to reading your comment, thanks. Does anyone know if it does well in NorCal?

You may want to get both. We had a tree that never produced fully formed fruit until I multi grafted for cross pollination.

Thanks for the info everyone! Went with the Suebelle and just purchased a Campbell while it was in stock for good measure.

In an effort to avoid making another post, anyone have suggestions on what container size to put them in (along with a mamey)? Considering the worries of how invasive the roots on these trees are and that the only places I have available to plant are along a fence I’m leaning towards trying my hand at growing in large pots. Something perhaps in the 30-50 gallon range but would love to hear any suggestions.

No advice except plant is in gound. White sapote is a rebel that won't be controlled.
