Zill selling mangos this year?
« on: June 02, 2024, 01:42:46 PM »
I'm planning a trip to Florida but just heard from a friend of a friend that he's not selling to the public this year. Is that true?

I've got to get this sorted out before I buy my plane tickets.

Whether Zills is selling mangos or not,
they are known to pick them really underipe (mature green)
I would suggest doing more research and maybe hit places like Tropical Acres etc.
When I got some from Zills, a few did not ripen and they just rotted.

Just go to Walter Zill for mangoes and he wont disappoint when it comes to picking mangoes correctly. Should be open now.

Thanks for the recommendation. I've been to all the other places, but Zales is the only place where I can get a few hundred pounds all at once to make the trip worth it, and the green unripe ones are perfect. I can travel with them or ship them and they arrive in excellent condition. The overwhelming majority of mangoes I have bought from him have ripened just fine. He was even kind enough to do a tasting with me last year and did a tasting with some of my friends a few years before.

For the trip really to be worth it, I need to be able to bring back a few hundred mangoes that are unripe and then be able to enjoy them over the next week or two or share them with family and friends. Some of the other places you mentioned will also have mangoes but they are already ripe or close to right won't ship at that time. Funny story, I almost swore off sweet tart because some of the ones I was buying were ripe or just passed right and they ended up having a funky carrot taste to them. Same with malika. It was only the homegrown Sweet Tarts that really seem to develop Peak flavor for me and convince me to give it another chance, and then I bought some green Sweet Tarts last year from Zales and let them slowly ripen and be tasted fantastic. I even shared them with my staff and that they all want sweet and tart trees.

Tropical acres was a disappointment. I agree either Zill’s is a necessary stop to make the roundtrip from CA worth it. It sounds like OP’s already made the rounds and done the research. Though it’s true some people fall off the turnip truck at robert was here and think they’ve found heaven.

100% agree.  The buying experience is great and they pick with home consumption in mind.  If you have some time, Walter may regale you with he history of the variety and talk you into trying something he likes.  Alter the taste, you may leave with a few of the new finds in your purchase.

Can anyone say Amy, Veronica and Beatrice :)

To be sure, picking timing had plummeted in recent years. There has been a transition and quality has suffered. I would say you get mature green if you are lucky. Often it’s way too early to ripen. Buyer beware.

Excalibur sells mango from whatever trees their collection is producing.

I know everyone here knows that there are two Zill family mango operations but just wanted to mention it on this thread in case we have new people reading.

ZHPP, Gary Zill's nursery is great for trees (the public can't buy trees though) but not great for fruits.

Zill's Mangos, Water Zill's farm stand, is great for fruits

My personal opinion

I see your point though...if you need to transport mangos back, hard ones are best.
There are some collectors here though that I prefer that will pick mangos perfectly so that they ripe up in about 3-5 days. Can make the trip back and still taste amazing.
Tropical Acres Farms are basically ripe in 1-3 days or ready to eat when you buy! It is a race I have to fight each time I buy...basically eating 3 mangos a meal.
Zills (the nursery) ones take over a week or more in my experience.

I called and they indicate they will sell fruit in about 3 weeks time.

Some FL friends told me to message Alex and let him know I’m coming ( I did and let him know I had a grip of Cherimoya I'd brought from my tree's to FL to share as well), he never messaged back on tff or fb so I ordered off his website and picked up from the farm. I was not impressed with the mango’s or employee’s who seem’d to not know jak and were question averse. So if your in with Alex or he chooses to interact with you, it must be alot better according to the mutual acquaintance’s we have.
It’s not the Sheehan delivery of the dankest mango’s on the planet like I got from you when we met briefly at the F&S , Mr. Rollinia’s going away fiesta. Thanks so much again for that !

My limited interactions with Alex have been pleasant and he's generous with his time. Only been to his farm 3 times. If I didn't live 2 hours away, I'd be there more often.
