Can you please identify this tree
« on: July 08, 2024, 01:02:57 PM »
I lost the id tag for this one. It is fruiting for the first time and I can’t remember what it is. The fruit is a little bigger than a golf ball , starts green turns yellow and then brown. Strong lemon flavor and a big seed in the middle.

Garcinia of some sort. Maybe improved lemon drop or achachairu. Definitely not eugenia.

What’s the ‘obvious differentiator’ for future reference?

Only Garcinia I have experience with has multiple seeds

Those leaf closeups are the giveaway for me. Looks very similar to me much smaller lemondrop and achacha leaves - thick shiny long green leaf arranged in opposite pairs

I can see how maybe based upon the fruit alone, considering ubajay and other eugenias. But the leaves are large and thick, much larger and thicker than most eugenias. The opposite leaves definitely suggests garcinia to me. Based upon this, started thinking of garcinias with fruit that look like that.

This should be an achacha....
If rind is pretty thick that's what it should be.
Garcinia sp. achachairu...
Not G.humilis!!!  8)
