Sonpari vs Arka Neelkiran
« on: May 15, 2025, 02:02:59 PM »
Real shot in the dark here, but can anyone comment on how different these two varieties taste? Which is superior, if at all?

I have a 1g Sonpari but I think it may be too vigorous for my space...

Would love to know your thoughts!

Lucas

I have not tasted Neelkiran but I have  a fruiting Sonpari in my yard. It is not that vigorous a mango, certainly not in the Valencia Pride class in terms of growth. Really good flavor.

How large is your tree? What size do you think someone can realistically keep it at?

I have a medium sized fruiting son Pari, about 6-7 ft tall. I would describe it as medium vigor with a somewhat sprawling and open canopy. Pretty disease resistant tree and exceptional quality fruit; I’m honestly surprised I don’t hear more about it. If you are into Indian mangos it is definitely worth looking into.

Tree is prone to potassium deficiency but that can be pretty easily corrected with liberal sulfate of potash.

I agree with DocTropical assessment of the Son Pari Mango tree Growth. My Tree is still flowering but so far is growing well at a moderate rate here in SoCal.

I find son pari to be on the lower vigor side.
Very productive though.
I'm not a big fan of the fruit, it just taste okay and they're a lot of other heavy hitters coming in around the same time. So I find every season in lot end up getting neglected and going bad
I really like arka neelkiran, the only reason I haven't grafted it so far is I hear it's really low vigor

Arka Neelkiran is defintely low vigor, I'm probably 2-3 years away from fruit. Need to add another tree in a bettwe spot. I haven't tried it. I've tried Sonpari a couple times, I like Kesar better

Ive tried both and like both of them. I have small Arka Neelkiran growing but super slow. They make a very small tree. I think it has the edge between the two due to a more rich flavor. Ive only tried it twice. Son Pari is good but a larger more vigorous tree.

I imagine Son Pari has an edge on production - How would you rate Arka Neelkiran's production?

Thank you! There's many varieties that have zero attention, I am trying to trial. One thing I got mixed up on Sonpari isn't the same as Sundari- Sundari also called Suvahnareka has much more problems with disease, and the flavor is different.

If I had the space I'd do exactly that too. Has Sundari fruited for you yet? Are you growing Mahmood Vikarabad?

Sundari hasn't fruited- seems to be a disease magnet, my Mahmood Vikarabad died last year, I'm picking up another tree for TAF probably after mango fest.

Was watching both vids of Alex's today and saw your post.  Both are timestamped to your cultivars in the OP.

Sonpari - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eeZQsrL549g&t=1844s&t=0h18m04s  Note - The tree is at 18:04.  I can't get that one to timestamp at the correct spot for some reason.

Arka Neelkiran - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yal6EVy0OAI&t=2217s&t=0h36m57s
