Kinzu (Hong Kong) Kumquat Coming to flower
« on: June 16, 2021, 09:35:39 PM »

A very impressive citrus, after only 1.5 years (under not so great conditions) from seed comes flowers. I heard this was true about this cultivar, just amazed to see it myself.

Franklazar,  was the kumquat grown from seed?   If so how long was the time from planting to flowering?

Very nice!  I bought two hong kong kumquats over the years and the always declined and died, never understood why.

Yes it was. I got the seeds and planted them February of last year, so roughly 1.5 years.

I owe you a few so I'll send some seedlings! Or, if you prefer some budwood Brian let me know.

Nothing, they are pretty much useless.  You can eat the skin which is sweet but there's no flesh just skin and seeds.  I think they are only good for breeding kumquats and ornamental reasons.

I just want one to round out my kumquat collection

I feel the most useful thing that the HK Kumquat can be used for is breeding. It would be interesting to use as its juvenile period can break as early as 8 months. Otherwise I believe they have a slight spice with sour and as Brian said, sweeter peel when ripened.. the size of a dime with a single seed.

Perhaps that can be used to make some interesting hybrids much much sooner.
