On our young trees we always put lights low under the frost cloth as heat rises.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: First Ross Sapote
« on: November 09, 2025, 12:35:19 PM »
My canistel is a Trompo and has been in the ground around eight years.  Although it has produced a few fruits over the past few years, this is the 1st year it has produced  a large crop.  This is also the first year we had bees, which may have helped.
The Ross are both older trees that I bought because they were larger trees that were on sale because they had freeze damage . It has taken 3 years in ground for them to start producing.
The Trompo is a prettier tree than the Ross but the frost damage on the Ross and the subsequent growth may have something to do with that.
The fruit from the Ross was only custard like next to the seed. The rest was drier then the Trompo. My second Ross is holding immature fruit now, so if weather holds and the tree holds the fruit I will let you know how that fruit turns out. I intend on keeping all 3 trees no matter :)
I know so little about the trees I am growing, like fertilizing, when, how to measure etc.. I think they live in spite of me lol
I do think the bees have made a difference, although nothing seems to make the Butterscotch sapodilla hold its fruit. Seriously, I just want to try one.
OK back to canistel, I will let you know what the fruit on the second Ross is like. And please let me know any tips you may have.  My trees will thank you :)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / First Ross Sapote
« on: November 08, 2025, 10:36:37 AM »
Tried my first Ross Sapote (found under the tree).today.  The taste is like a milder canistel.  So, comparing the two:
1. Taste is similar
2. Ross texture close to the seeds is much creamier, almost pudding like, but outside of that small area, the texture is the same as canistel.  My canistel are mostly smooth with only one or two being drier (egg yolk texture)
3. Ross is much smaller than canistel so it is suited for an individual serving.  The canistel  is easier to process and freeze to be used later in recipes.
4.  Ross leaves latex on your lips, canistel does not.
5. I think the canistel is a prettier tree for the landscape
I am glad to have both trees, but if I had to choose one it would be canistel, I really don't like latex lips lol

I also have Arue, but it is still small and hasn't flowered yet. Trompo has been fruiting over the last 2 months and has 3 left on the tree.  I will prune when the fruit on the tallest branches fall. Arue has been slow growing and just started putting out decent growth thus year..

I have 3 sweet Tamarind trees and one sour tamarind tree.  The sweet tamarind flower and fruit profusely during the hot summer months.  The sour tamarind has never flowered although it is  10+ feet

"Trompo" is also large and tear shaped.  I also let the fruit drop from the tree to harvest since it changes color pretty early on and I am never sure when it is completely ripe. Checking under the tree each day is like checking under chickens for eggs lol. The fruit is large and is moister then most descriptions. I like that the fruit on the tree ripens over time rather than all at once.  I share fruit but am mostly freezing it to use later in baking.  A pretty tree that has taken time to mature but is now one of my favorites.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Jackfruit trees stink!!
« on: June 30, 2025, 01:56:14 PM »
Exactely! The scent of a couple of flowers was fine, but then there seemed to be so many flowers and the scent became overbearing.  Last year one or two flowers were fine now it seems they are everywhere.  "Too much of a good thing", maybe lol

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Jackfruit trees stink!!
« on: June 29, 2025, 11:04:36 AM »
A few years ago I stuck some jackfruit seeds in a pot, placed them under a strawberry tree and forgot about them.  The trees grew through the pot and are now about 15 ft.  I started to notice the smell of ripe jackfruit a few weeks ago but couldnt find any on the trees I actually planted. However the scent/ smell kept getting stronger and unpleasantly stronger. When I looked up into the trees that planted themselves, it was loaded with male flowere.  Very stinky, so beware when planting jackfruit trees near the house.

What is the shelf life of a rose apple after being picked?  Refrigerated? Counter?  I ask because as soon a they give off a little of the rose scent a critter steals them.

If we talk about Syzygium jambos, I say that the fruit loses its fragrance and its intense rose scent very quickly.

Yes, Syzygium jambos, when you say quickly, what do you mean timewise. Also where are you growing this? I ask because I am growing in ground outside and don't know anything about frost hardiness.  Thanks.

The fruit I have is pretty good. It does not have as strong a rose scent as some, but this is its first year fruiting so maybe the scent will be stronger next year. The fruit I tried, that sold me on a rose apple, had a rose scent that I could smell as soon as it was cut into. I am hoping mine will develop as strong a scent. It is a pretty fruit easy to cut. The skin is softer
then an apple, the fruit is crispy but not as juicy as an apple but not dry either. It is free stone so easy to eat.. Really a nice fruit, refreshing and different. I can see it used in salads and when you want to serve something different to guests.

Thank you!  They've been out for a few days and still have a light rose scent. Interesting the way the seed rattles around.

Thanks everyone, I'll trim the top and leave the bottom branches.  I don't remember what variety it is.  Although it flowers profusely, it has never fruited.

Thanks, this is the first fruit I noticed-- so 3 months to ripen.  Unfortunatly, it grew through a 15 gallon pot before I could plant it and it grows so fast that I can't move it now.  It is close to other trees and a walking path, so I keep cutting it back, but it doesn't seem to care. It needed no cover over winter. The tree/bush is pretty with large leaves and I haven't noticed it bothered by insects or disease.  So far a really easy keeper of a tree. Now, if the fruit is good tasting I will have won the tropical/subtropical fruit tree lottery!  Only caveat is it grows wide rather than tall.
Do you know how it is propagated?

Just noticed this fruit and wondered how long until it is ripe.
