Cherries from the NW were only $2/lb this year. I ate a lot of them. They were the same price as in 2005 or so. So they rank second. With mangoes ranking at the top for me. I ate lots of my Gold Nugget mangoes this year. I learned that to really bring out the taste they should be refrigerated. They are a middle tier mango.  More taste can be brought out by cutting them up. Putting in a bowl. Add some salt. Give the salt 15-30 minutes to work its way in.

There are two kinds of mango eating public here in Florida. You have those who want ultra clean with no black anything on the mango exterior. They can find these mangos, that are grown outside the USA, at Walmart, etc. But then you have mango eater public #2, that is far more understanding of fruit imperfections. I have many customers in the #2 category.

In past years Publix has made an effort to carry Florida grown mangoes.-

I don't mind over ripe. If you want under ripe, Walmart has them.

What we know about mango trees and carbon sequestration so far

As mango trees grow, a process of carbon sequestration or carbon uptake occurs. The tree absorbs carbon dioxide from the environment and with it forms the trunk, branches leaves and fruit.

The process of growing, harvesting and shipping mangoes, from the orchard to the retailers, generates greenhouse gases and releases them into the environment. Mangoes use up more carbon than they emit. They are not just carbon-neutral but they have a carbon negative footprint. Mango trees are super absorbers of CO²; Mexican mango trees absorb significantly more greenhouse gases than is created in the production/shipping process, making them a positive crop to combat climate change.

zands, what are your thoughts on Fairchild? I saw you had some fruit for sale recently (wished I was close enough to get some). I recently got a small 3gal because I'm reading David Fairchild's autobiography.

Based on my Fairchild tree.
A smallish mango w some mid sized. It is green until it turns yellow. People will not be prone to stealing it. So good for perimeter plantings by a road, for example. You can keep it pruned to a bushy shape. It is not an upright grower.

It is not your classic blander Florida mango. It has some zing to it. Not super sweet like some of the new Zills.

If I had to start all over again, I would plant a Fairchild too.  Zero anthracnose on my Fairchild tree.

It should be a good rootstock tree. Due to the larger seed. Meaning more feral and primitive. High seed to flesh ratio compared to other more "bred" mangos.

Aha, I didn't remember where it came from. The PSM gave us thousands of fruits and is pretty consistent though very vigorous. Our johny appleseed adventure paid off on that one, as we eventually bought the property that it's on.

In general it was probably the best harvest we've ever had, all thanks to that great extended cold snap back in Dec or Jan.

You have dealt with a thousand more mango trees and mango hounds than I have. So I remember what happened with Okrung tree. You got it from Zills. Very nice size and good looking. I bought it from you. Then after I had not planted it for 6 weeks. You asked to buy it back.

You grafted the PSM tree in my yard and thanks. It has a super output this year. I rate the fruits better than NDM I have. Actually you should be selling scions from the old school NDM tree you have.   Old.... not an NDM #4

I  wish you lots of luck. Sofia is the same latitude as Maine in the USA.  One factor for me (in Sofia) would be which mango variety is most red.  For impressing yourself and others. Example---  I have a mango tree that makes red fruits. Buyers gravitate towards it. Even though I tell them that my green, turning to yellow mangoes are more delicious.

Red meaning ripe, being human nature, is how you see all these 99 cent -- 99¢ mangoes at Walmart last week. They were very nice red. But picked far prematurely in Peru, Mexico, Brazil, whatever. They then pasteurize these mangoes and ship them to America for dunces to eat.

UPDATE---
Still working out OK. The only negative is that this Chinese mower needs three strong pulls to start up. My previous Troy Bilt lawnmower was under powered. So I would have to stop 3-4 times or so to remove the accumulated grass from the deck's underside.  I used it in side discharge mode to help it out. The previous Troy Bilt Briggs Stratton engine was very easy to start but not strong enough.

My new Chinese mower claims 209 horsepower. Even if this is an exaggeration, let's say it really is 195 horsepower. I no longer have grass buildup on the mower deck's underside.  I use side discharge. When I am done mowing, I clean the underside (grass accumualtion) with a plastic builders' trowel. Not metal. Plastic will not harm the undersides paint, leading to rust.

2015 it was a very dry spring. It was so dry that my nam doc mai got a complex taste. Not the usual honey flavor.  There has been little rain the last three months in South East Florida. But there must have been enough morning dew, because my lawn looks fairly green.

I better go outside and water some mango trees to minimize fruit drop. I have not done this in years.
