Are there any named selections of strawberry guava? Seems like they are all just grown from seed and sold, but wasn’t sure if there are some standout seedlings. Same for lemon of the cattleianum. I also have many guava and I’m trying to improve my collection of guajava from mostly seedy ones to near seedless ones.

As far as my strawberry and lemon guava go, I enjoy them, but when people ask if they are good, I say it’s hard to really tell. They sort of hit the spot, but I wouldn’t say they are delicious. I have never tried grafting a cattleianum but have considered making a 2 in 1 tree to save some space. It’s currently raining strawberry guava at my house and it’s in full bloom.

There is some larger fruiting strains of lemon strawberry guava. I grew some out from superior selection from Hawaii.

The seedlings have a decent variability. One of the plants has massive production with large good fruit. While others are lower production with medium size fruit.

I used a epiphyllum variety called Rowans Red. But you can probably use any early to mid season flower epiphyllum.

I couldn’t find where to get Rowans Red, and I couldn’t find a seller that indicated whether early or mid season.  Where did you get yours?

A trade from this forum. I am probably the only available source for this variety Rowans Red. The guy I traded from went dormant account.

If your interested, I can sell some larger cuttings $10 per cutting. I don't have much 'Desert Sunset' available, im trying to replicate it to increase production on my wall garden. Desert Sunset there is a few available sources online.

Wanted to say Epiphyllum sp. 'Desert Sunset' makes superior larger fruit. Taste better then most dragon fruits I have tried. Taste like green jolly rancher candy and is around the size of a 12 oz soda can. It does need cross pollination to set fruit though.

What would be a good cross pollinating Epi for the Desert Sunset?

I'd rather have a sour (but good) tasting cactus fruit than the bland mealy things I usually get

I have the same mindset.  Also, that is why I am growing out Eulychnia Acida and Stenocereus Gummosus, they are supposed to have some level of sour in the flavor.  Even the spanish common name for Gummosus is Pitaya Agria meaning sour pitaya so that is why I am eager to cultivate these ones among others.

I have heard high praise of gummosus, I am also trying to grow it out. I have 5 cuttings from mature plants rooting, 20 seedlings, 4 seedlings grafted onto hylocereus and 1 grafted onto opuntia.

S. gummosus is slow growing and more susceptible to bacteria and fungal related rot on it's own roots at least. Grafting to dragon fruit is a good idea.

Cross posting for visibility/record

Corryocactus spp. - Sanky
I cannot understand how this cactus isnt better known. This is the best cactus fruit I have tasted hands down- roughly the size of a baseball and good out of hand or juiced and made into a Sanky-ade. More tolerant of cold and aridity than lemons, deserves much wider cultivation.

I have about 3 seedlings over 4 years old of Sanky. Currently no flowers yet, hoping next year.

Ric,

Impressive production what has been your fertilizing and watering schedule? I have never seen PCH#1 produce that much fruit. Then again the original collection plant was moderate production with no assumed inputs.

I have mine in the ground, cold tolerance is better than Iexpected.  Survived outdoors as 1 year old seedling low 40s with no issues. I think mature trees can possibly handle light frosts.

Looks like a smaller tree, how big is the tree? Have you tried grafting to canistel?

I would opt for a good strain of lemon drop. Its a more compact grower for containers which doesn't require male and female to set fruit.

Suggest to keep in a pot, im in same area. All the Plinias seem to grow faster in containers here in SoCal. Best time to fertilize is in the evening when night time temps are above 60f.

Use diluted amounts of fish emulsion, bird guano, and kelp see how the Plinia sp. responds.

Yeah I have 3 varities, Morgan red, Asian Black, and Jamaican stripe. All 3 are good juicers, I find morgan red and Jamaican stripe the best ones for juicing, production, and ease of growing.

I love the flavor of goutidiana fruit. I got a nice sized female one fruiting now.

15
How does Vasconcellea goutidiana handle weather in Port Saint Lucie?

I'm a little north of there and my goutidiana dislikes full sun, but has three fruit hanging.

Encouraging to hear, I may plant some out in shade in the future. I grow as well in SoCal it likes part sun here.

Hi,

I have an Asunta 2 and tried pollinating it with American Beauty pollen but it failed.  Have you (or anyone else on this forum) had success pollinating this cultivar and if so which pollen did you use?  Many thanks!

I have Asunta 3, and have tried to use epiphyllum and palora pollen. Its failed this year and last year as well. I may end up chopping up Asunta 3 and replace with a better self fertile one.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Who here is growing tamarillo?
« on: August 12, 2025, 02:37:37 AM »
I am growing it, requires part sun. I actually think it performs better with part sun then full here in Southern CA. The best Tamarillo I have tasted is the seedling from the 'Peach' selection offered from raindance seeds.

Just tasted the fruit today, it is definitely a top tier for Pouteria fruits.

I am at northern ca 9b. Mine is an eversweet or sweet, tons of flowers and it drops alot, then few fruits every year. I had pollinated and get 3x more fruit.

Both are winners sweet and eversweet reliable producers for coastal SoCal.

Is this the Inga species that also grows smaller than normal Inga?

Yes, it is reported to be one of the smaller stature growth habit Igna sp.

Resurrecting this one again.  Was never able to get any response from Oscar then got distracted with life! Still looking.

I have extra plants I can sell, in 1 gal container. $30  + shipping. I can take pictures of the plants.

24
I would get the guayusa plant from logees before they sell out again. The logees strain is definately worth it and has a good flavor.

25
Is your tree growing well and any flowers on it yet?

Yeah I ate fruit last year. This year is flowering right now. The fruit taste good reminds me closer to flavor of a good Malay apple. Crisp with a nice sweet wax jambu flavor with some backend strawberry flavor. Im going to try to find I spot for it in ground after I cut out my figs.
