« on: March 26, 2024, 11:41:06 PM »
I have a big flowering yellow jabo and another member was kind enough to trade scions with me for cross pollination.  As such, I had to prune my tree.

I have some nice diameter branches if you want them.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Cheap Guajava Seedlings / Sleeves
« on: March 22, 2024, 12:54:40 PM »
Anyone have a source for guajava rootstocks? I can find airlayered plants here in nurseries for $40-$60 for 3g's but that's kinda steep. I want to propagate some of my rare psidium, which I've found graft onto guajava just fine.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Variegated Feijoa Scions
« on: March 17, 2024, 04:15:28 PM »

Was incredibly lucky to do some grafts of this, and access scions. It’s  the only variegated feijoa I know of personally, but seen a few online. Supposedly it is fruitless, but it wasn’t planted close to other trees. It does flower though, and it’s a great pattern.

I have various sizes of wood from 3/8” to toothpick. Lots of pencil size and a bit under.

$20 each pencil size scion - minimum 2
$30 for bigger wood

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Some Brazil Trip Photos 2023
« on: December 19, 2023, 09:05:05 PM »
I went on a short trip to Brazil (not fruit specific) over the last 10 days that was mostly to do some skateboarding stuff, and to visit old friends. The first few days were in Maresias, then down to Florianopolis, and then back in São Paulo for the day. Though I'd been to Brazil many times before (this was my 9th trip) this was the first one where I was looking intently for fruit stuff, and it did not disappoint. The photos are a bit out of order, but still thought I'd share.

This is a 60 year old + Paulista that was planted by my friend's parents. He had fond memories of climbing it to gather fruit. I have never seen a bigger jabo, it was probably around 3 storeys tall, and the scaffold branches up top were insanely thick.

The trunk of said jabo

Old avocado of some type at church where we hit the farmer's market, unfortunately no fruit of mention available :(

Red jabo in someone's yard on the way to the beach in Florianopolis

Large mango in São Paulo at my friend's dad's place, it was loaded with fruit but they say major worm problems and don't get any edible fruit

Some type of native guava planted by the bus station, lots of these around in Florianopolis

Photos of the leaves and flowers of said guava

Jatai stingless bee entrance to hive, I was able to acquire some honey from jatai, really strange taste almost medicinal

Along this walk over the dunes to the beach, there were wild guava "araça" species everywhere

Acerola was in season, and the size of their fruit makes ours look pitiful

The new airport at Florianopolis was probably the nicest airport I've ever been to, and they had massive sabara's planted throughout the courtyard, installed as mature specimens

Wild guava growing out of a sewer grate on the local hills

Some kind of campomanesia by the looks of it

Not sure on the cultivar of this jabo, but good size!

Red jabo with a nice size trunk, about $30 USD

Wild guavas all over, this was on the island of Campeche which had been logged and burnt, so it was second generation forest

Jabo caipirinha made with sabara, seeds, skin and all - heavy on the tannins

Good size yellow jabo with some passionfruit on it

A grove of massive sabaras in São Paulo

An unknown "araça" which they couldn't remember if was red or yellow, my guess was strawberry guava of some kind

40 year old sabara in my friend's yard in SP

Some type of inga in the woods

Large coffee trees outside "Cafe Cultura" which is a coffee chain down there

That large guava by the bus station was flowering

Checking for some jabos

Another very nice size yellow jabo, which all Brazilians adore and think is one of the best tasting fruits

Red jabo outside the laundry joint on the street!

Stingless bee apiary

Some kind of jabo outside a clothing store, fruit was not great

20' tall pitanga

40-50' pitanga

Absolute honker of a yellow jabo

Frozen sabara pre-caipirinha

Nice rack of coffee fruit coming in

Grafted red jabo at my friend's pool

A whole street row of red jabo

Jabos are used all over in architectural settings

Pitanga and jaboticaba caipirinhas on Costa da Lagoa in Floripa

Wild guava growing out of a sewer

One of the wild beach guavas growing in the dunes

Massive acerola trees out there all over

I will be presenting at the SB Horticultural Society about rare fruits on Nov 1st at 7pm next week. It's free. Most members of TFF will recognize everything I'm talking about and be bored, but figured I'd mention it anyhow if someone were in the area and wanted to check it out.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / High Stake Grafts
« on: September 14, 2023, 02:26:08 PM »

Grafting campomanesia hirsuta from another plant (thank you Wildlands Nursery / Nate!) to try to get some genetic diversity. My hirsuta flowers endlessly and makes no fruit so I think it needs a mate.

Anyone else done some high stakes grafting this year?

I am thinking of another get-together here in Santa Barbara and trying to figure out the best time for everyone. Should line up with dragonfruit,  guava, longan, and a bunch of other stuff.

Wanting to move the date into November, so let's figure one out!

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / WTB Sabara Rootstocks
« on: August 22, 2023, 02:49:20 PM »
Anyone have some flats they could spare?

Anyone down there or know of anyone with collections? Going end of August for ilama season. Will be in Libertad area.

I'm on the search for the best cherry of the rio grande. I like the fruit, the plant is easy to grow, and it's aesthetically pleasing. They take very easily to grafting and I've been collecting varieties over the years, and planting seeds.

This is a fruit off of ScottR's variety. It sure is big, and the graft is really productive. Definitely the biggest I've grown.

These are a series of fruits on my own seedling which is from Exotica. Mine has the most agreeable flavor, which is leaning papaya.

A mix of fruits, the black are El Dorado seedling, seeds which I purchased from Marcos in 2019. There are some of my seedling, and one of ScottR.

El Dorado is unique in that it goes totally black. The flavor is unusual and I can't really put a finger on it other than saying it's a "darker" almost chocolate'y undertone. It has a propensity to make more seeds than other varieties (3-4 vs 1-2).

If anyone has a great CORG, please post up!

I have:
My Exotica seedling
ScottR seedling
Ben's Beaut
El Dorado

My FFF seedling
Achetadomestica (grafted 2021, still yet to fruit, but big growth, it's probably grown 2-3')
Wildlands Nursery (Nate Blackmore)

2 x Orange CORGs (one has fruited, the other not yet)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Black Fig Fly Protection
« on: July 22, 2023, 01:25:04 PM »
I went from a solid crop of annual figs to zero last year due to black fig fly, and this year upped my game. These methods seem to be working, and I really hope the whole tree bagging method works. The bagging of individual figs is tedious and it can break them off in the wind.

Here are a few options:

Bagging individual figs using small organza bags

Bagging the whole tree using this type of net, cinched at the bottom:

Using a large organza bag to bag an entire branch tip with multiple figs

Man, I hate doing this when it's 95f out.

I think this is the ideal size to bag them at, any bigger and I think BFF can sting it, it's still too hard at this size

Tropical Fruit Discussion / CENTRAL COAST CA MEET UP - June 3, 2023
« on: April 07, 2023, 03:34:41 PM »
Trying this again, would be great to get the local Central Coast folks (or SoCal / NorCal) together to hang out and talk fruit.

June 3, 2023 - 11am - 4pm or so - Got lots of parking, some things should be fruiting, probably mulberries, some eugenia, maybe jaboticaba

I'll fire up my pizza oven and can get some dough going. Bring your dough and toppings too. BYOBeverages

If you can make it, please post up and I can start to plan some things out.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Eugenia Cross Species Grafting
« on: April 06, 2023, 11:56:22 PM »
I know this topic has been brought up many times but I wanted to get the ball rolling by actually just tacking a bunch of stuff on and seeing what happens.

I’m trying out:

Pitomba x CORG
Orange CORG X Calycina
Repanda x Pitanga

Others I’m considering:

Pitangatuba x Araza (wood looks similar)
Pitangatuba x Repanda (seems unlikely)

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / El Dorado CORG scions (fat)
« on: April 02, 2023, 02:22:53 PM »
Made some big pruning decisions on my fruiting El Dorado seedling. The flavor is agreeable with a kind of herbal or cola flavor that is not like other CORGs I’ve tried. Very sweet. It had a lot of seeds but it was first year fruiting. They are the black fruit in the photos.

$5 each, min 4 - $10 ship in USA ONLY

$10 for the big daddy scion

All of it for $40 shipped

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Cocktail Trees
« on: March 30, 2023, 10:34:56 PM »
Is anyone into making cocktail trees? I’m always short on space and always needing cross pollination for better fruit set so over the last few years I’ve gone kind of Dr Frankenstein. Here are a few:

Santa Barbara peach with: Flavor King pluot, Sweet Treat Pluerry, Flavor Grenade pluot, Santa Rosa plum, Arctic Star Nectarine, Royal Lee, Minnie Royal, Royal Crimson, Spicy Z, Snow Queen Nectarine, Tropic Snow Peach, and Cotton Candy Aprium.

Feijoa with Coolidge, Improved Coolidge, Mammoth, Nazemetz, Nikita and 5 or so NZ varieties

Sabara jaboticaba with: white, red, otto anderson phitantra, escarlate, navel, paulista, ESALQ, fruiting sabara from my older tree, grimal, Coronata 1, 2, 3, and a few others I forget now

Pitangatuba with FFF selected "Lemonhead" and "Gigante" adding on more from another collector this Saturday

Apple tree with: Bill's Red Flesh, Goodland, Orange Pippin, Akero, Irish Peach, White Winter pearmain, Pink Pearl, Winter Banana, Dorsett, Anna

Another look at the cocktail, it's just unhappy right now due to winter but it is about to explode on every single branch

Unknown plum with all the same stuff that's on the SB peach

$5 each restinga - some nice ones near pencil and a bunch of trim off those
$5 each white - smaller but nice size
$10 each dwarf - mostly small but workable, it’s a dwarf after all

All of it shipped for $50 in USA only

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Dragonfruit and Bees
« on: January 23, 2023, 02:45:06 PM »
Does anyone have experience with bees and dragonfruit? I read conflicting information. Some say that bees promote better fruit weight, quality, and fertilization - others report that bees steal all the pollen and leave none even on the stigma.

My experience has been that they often steal all the pollen before I can get to it and use it to cross pollinate - but then again, I had a ton more fruit last year than usual and LOTS of bees. I still hand pollinated as best I could, but maybe I don't need to?

Any firsthand experience would be awesome. I just got bees a month or so ago and looks like they will make it thru winter.

Hoping to find some scion wood of these. Anyone on here have some? Thank you in advance!
