Tropical Fruit Discussion / Top working rambutan
« on: March 21, 2024, 05:45:39 AM »
Probably a question for Peter or Mike T but I’ve heard rambutan are difficult to graft/top work?

I just ate the first fruit from a seedling tree I planted 3.5 years ago as a small 2ft tree, the fruit tasted great lovely sweet rambutan taste. Unfortunately the flesh Majorly clings to the seed. I will probably give it another year to see if it improves but this is not acceptable and is my first disappointment out of my seedling trees of many different fruits I’ve planted.

Here’s a picture of the first fruit.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / keitt mango taste
« on: February 14, 2024, 05:51:24 PM »
Had my first Keitt mango today, i dont think i have tasted "american" varieties before.  The mango was ok some mango taste but there was also this underlying what i could only describe as a slight chemical taste.  Then after eating the mango there was also this lingering "chemical" taste in my mouth, my daughter also found the same?

Im tempted to try another but is this what others have found? I have never tasted this in our aussie and thai mangoes.

Can anyone confirm or advise on mango tree varieties that are the mos resistant to anthracnose?

I have read that Florigon is one of the best is this true ?

What about out of the fancy new Zill varieties such as Orange sherbert, sweet tart etc how do these fair ?

I have nam doc mai and maha and they both get anthracnose they still manage to set some fruit.  Looking for a few more.

Climate is average 3000mm rain a year (118inches) with wet years up 5000mm (196inches) high humidity and much more tropical than florida.

Can anyone advise thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mid winter Mahachanok
« on: August 14, 2023, 08:23:47 PM »
So I picked my first maha fruit off my tree 7/8/23 which is mid winter here in Australia. Tree is 19months in ground. I also have picked my first two nam doc mai mid winter. Can I expect to this to be regular thing or will they continue to produce most of the year? My nam doc mai seems to flower continually?

Most mango from colder drier areas in Australia are picked much later in the year.

Citrus General Discussion / Washington navel wont flower
« on: August 14, 2022, 11:25:17 PM »
I have never posted in this section before wondering if anyone has any ideas. I live in the coastal tropics around 16 South latitude i planted a washington navel, emperor mandarin and myer lemon just over 2 years ago and a valencia orange 12months ago.  All of these trees are fruiting/flowering including the valenica orange at only 12months old except the washington navel.

My washington navel tree is actually the biggest and healthiest looking out of all these trees around 8ft high and wide but it will not flower?? Im very frustrated with it my myer lemon of the same age is absolutely loaded with lemons right now and my valencia is loaded with its first flowers but this big thick trunked Washington navel is doing nothing?

Should i stop fertilising it? Maybe its just too happy growing?  What normally triggers a navel to flower? I average 3000mm of rain a year it is in a full sun position as are all my citrus?  What time of the year would/should a navel fruit in my location?

thanks for any help

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Longan variety for tropics
« on: February 08, 2022, 06:35:01 PM »
Did a search here and seems longans might be a better chance of fruiting reliably in the tropics than lychee.  I prefer the taste of lychee but here 16 South lychee is extremely unreliable and can go many years in between fruiting in some cases.  Can anyone recommend or advise if longan will perform reliably in my area and if so what cultivar would perform? I see diamond river mentioned are there any others preferable ?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Ilama tree width
« on: January 27, 2022, 05:49:15 PM »
Looking for some info on those growing Ilama trees from seeds how wide do these trees get in a tropical environment with high rainfall.  I can only see references on google that they grow 7m high but nothing anywhere as to how wide they get.  Looking to work out some spacing.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / NDM vs Maha chanok
« on: July 20, 2021, 12:45:39 AM »
So i thought i had better plant a few mango trees, keep in mind i dont have access to all the fancy varieties you have in florida and I also live in a place much more humid and wet then florida.  I have a NDM already and have access to maha and keow savoy.  Should I plant a maha are they different enough to NDM to warrant a tree?  Anything else to know about NDM and Maha ?? I believe these are from thailand and most likely a better suit to my climate.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Reverse zone push
« on: July 03, 2021, 10:04:19 PM »
So this forum is full of people pushing warm plants into cold areas I have the reverse problem and looking for some advice.

So today I tried an atemoya for the first time and it was just sensational not sure on the variety but it’s like a huge sugar apple with hardly any seeds. I must grow this fruit.

My research has led me to believe that the atemoya is more suitable to sub tropics. I live in the true tropics can I have a chance of success with atemoya? Is there anyone else in lowland tropics who has had success?

I have a section on my property next to a creek that keeps day time temperatures approx 2-3 C cooler than surrounding area. Would this be the best spot to have a chance to fruit or do they need full sun all day? Along the creek gets sun from about 10-11 am until late arvo.

Any other advice or tips on how I can reverse zone push the atemoya I must have this fruit

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Cyclone/Hurricane proof fruit trees
« on: June 07, 2021, 07:05:52 PM »
Need some advice from those who have been through cyclones and hurricanes.  Im wanting to know which trees have stood up to significant hurricanes.  I have a section along the boundary of my house where I want to plant some fruit trees that are extremely resilient to coming down in cyclones.  This section of my house the trees will be 6-8 metres away from my house so i need trees that wont come down on my roof.

Im thinking of planting a rollinia along here can anyone comment on the cyclone resistance of rollinia grown from seedling? How about illama? Any other trees that you have had survive a cyclone or hurricane.

thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Foliar Micro-nutrients
« on: May 16, 2021, 07:08:33 PM »
Can anyone recommend a good foliar fertiliser for micro nutrients and trace elements preferably in Australia?  Im already using powerfeed and seasol for foliar but i dont believe either of these are for micros.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Fish frames as fertilizer
« on: May 05, 2021, 09:39:05 PM »
I go fishing a lot and have lots of fish frames that i throw in the rubbish would these be off good use to put around my fruit trees or is it too strong for the plants to handle?

If it is a good idea for fertilizer would it be better to bury them around the trees? Leaving them on the surface will probably attract pigs etc

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Atemoya pinks mammoth and African Pride
« on: March 24, 2021, 08:08:34 PM »
Can anyone confirm how these perform in the tropics? From what I have read they are more subtropical and in the tropics will produce much vegetative growth with not much fruit?  I already have the standard purple custard/sugar apples growing and would like to add these atemoya.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Not enough Durian Discussion
« on: March 18, 2021, 12:07:49 AM »
This is the tropical fruit forum and the Durian is undisputed KING, i see very little discussion on Durian and much discussion on mangoes (2nd rate fruit).  Who are growing durians out there? What is your favourite?  Are kampung Durian worth growing to you or will you only grow clones?  How difficult are Durian to grow in your area?

We have great trouble accessing clones here, my observations with seedlings is that they are very very easy to get started and appear quite hardy to me.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / How far away can you smell a durian tree???
« on: February 15, 2021, 09:07:19 PM »
So im sussing out the perfect spots on my property to plant durian trees, i dont mind the smell at all but my wife started dry reaching at the smell when i bought a durian into the house.  I have a very good spot approx 30m upwind of our house to plant them on slight slope.  I dont want to go putting plants there only to wait 10 years then have my wife complaining that she can smell them from the house and have to cut the trees down.  Is 30m upwind to close?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Flood tolerance of Durian
« on: February 11, 2021, 08:56:48 PM »
I know Durian are not tolerant of wet feet or areas where water lies.  My question is can during handle flooding for a short period 24-48hours? I have read that people in india plant them along river banks which surely must flood.  Im trying to work out where on my property i will plant durian and one of the places is along a steep section of river bank that will occasionally flood but never stays wet due to being steep.  Can anyone on this forum confirm the short term flood tolerance of Durian?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Help me plant out my orchard
« on: February 09, 2021, 01:06:48 AM »
Thought this might be fun to see what people would choose to plant out on a new block.  Have approx 2.5 acres to work with in tropical nth qld where anything can be grown.  Approx 3000mm of rainfall a year.  This is a list of what i currently have in ground, what would you add to it?

2x lemon myer i think
1x dwarf mandarin
1 x navel orange
1x strawberry guava
3x rambuatan
1x achacha
1x abiu
2x pulasan
2xmangosteen
1x red jaboticaba hybrid

(have 2x avacado seedling trees to go in the ground soon as well along with papaya.

What kind of rare fruits should i add?  On my certain list is russels garcinia, lucs garcinia, long kong, NDM mango

What about fruits such as chempadek, maprang etc i have never tried these fruits are they worth planting?  Anything else i must have, i know im missing lychee im holding off on them for now they are a serious attractant for birds and bats around here but they are the best tasting fruit so i will probably plant one or two anyway.

Please add to my list of must haves
