Tropical Fruit Discussion / Talisia sylvatica flowering
« on: July 01, 2016, 07:19:44 PM »

I came back home from school to find my talisia sylvatica flowering! It flowered in only 3 years. Does anyone know if the flowers are male or female? I forgot to check out the flowers, and I am back up north and can't tell through photo.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Durian Doctors in Need
« on: November 22, 2014, 08:43:56 AM »

Hey everyone,

I'm back at my house for thanksgiving break, and when I checked outside something strange was happening to my durians. On one side of the durian, all the leaves had black spots on them, and I was thinking fungus and moisture issues. But then when I turned one around the other side of the leaves were fine with no black dots. Does anyone know what could be causing this?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Asia Travel Updates
« on: June 02, 2014, 12:02:42 PM »
Hey everyone,

As of now I am in Guangzhou, China. I will be going to Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Langkawi, Kota Kinabalu, then to Tenom and maybe Limbang.

I am in Guangzhou to collect some plants/seeds of lychee and wild rambutan. Since heading off the train station I already saw people selling lychees and myrica rubra.  I first headed today to the Jiangnan Fruit and Vegetables market. When we told the taxi driver to go there, he dropped us off at the wholesale distribution trading center and talked to the guards for a while to let us in. Turns out they thought we were foreign investors looking to purchase and distribute, but then we walked to the market itself. I saw several different lychee varieties, and onE of them being sold was picked fully green but still sweet. I forgot to take picturespecially in all the excitement.  I ended up buying lychees and mangosteen for less than a dollar a pound.

Tomorrow I am heading to South China Botanical Gardens and I will take lots of pictures.

On the streets I found a giant lychee being sold as well, we tried to ask variety names, but they laughed and shook their heads.

I will go into more detail later on about the fruits, but for now I have limited WiFi and no phone service. Will make sure to post everything else on lychees.

I made some jaboticaba juice

A nice 15 lb box of jaboticaba and lemon drop mangosteen that I made jam out of

A 3 gal bucket of jaboticaba, which I also made jam from

An African breadfruit from Grimal Grove, I have a big one on the kitchen counter. Anyone have recipes for this besides the porridge they make from it?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Things Happening in the Garden
« on: April 19, 2014, 01:33:14 PM »
Hey everyone,

I do not know what is happening, but something or someone has been chopping my plants. I was gone for a couple of days this week, and when I came back on Thursday I saw my plants chopped down.

My cambuca which was nice and bushy that I got from Adam was chopped on the sides. It wasn't too bad

My pitangatuba which was over two feet tall and on the verge of flowering was chopped down to this.

My other cambuca was chopped down completely

My jaboticaba was actually cut nicely, but still I am mad at whatever did this.

The only good thing that happened in the garden when I came back was that my pomegranate is flowering(desertnyi variety)

At first I thought it was my dad as we just came back from Adam's place where he talked to us about jaboticaba pruning, and the first tree chopped was my hybrid jaboticaba. But then my cambuca was entirely chopped, and nothing happened for a while, so I just disregarded it. But when I came back from my trip I saw all the other trees chopped and I knew my dad wouldn't do it.

My dad said it was most likely my dog, but If he did the pots would have been knocked down and the cut branches would be on the floor, but all the branches were picked up and couldn't be found anywhere. As well the pots that were chopped down were the ones in the back out of his reach so my dog couldn't have done it. The type of cut was different as well, if my dog would have done it it would have been ripped, but all of them were nice clean cuts as if done by clippers. And it could not have been an accidental cut by the lawn mowers as every time they cut I do a damage assessment in the garden.

It was really windy the pas few days, but like I said there were no branches on the floor. Has this happened to anyone else? Could it have been a bird, rat, or any other animal? I am going to be gone for a whole week on Monday, and I am worried about my plants, so if anybody has any idea who or what is doing this to my plants I would greatly appreciate it. Hopefully I don't have a plant psychopath who wants cuttings from my yard.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Today's Fruit Haul
« on: April 06, 2014, 10:20:15 AM »

I picked up a nice selection of fruits today for my Silver Knight Interview on Tuesday, I am going for the science category and going to let the judges try some fruit. In the picture, there is mabolos, black sapote, red custard apples, rollinia, jaboticabas, wampi, mulberries, passion fruit flowers, tamarind, Persian lime, annatto, and a couple other things. They are a mixture of things picked up in my yard, and a little bit of fruits from the Fruit and Spice Park.

Wish me luck!

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Wanted: Orange Sherbet Mango Tree
« on: March 30, 2014, 07:10:36 PM »
Hey everyone,

My dad wanted to take out my macadamia and plant a mango tree. I told him I would only allow it if he allows me to pick the cultivar, so I thought orange sherbet. Does anyone have orange sherbet mango for sale/trade?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Low-Chill Cherry... in Progress
« on: March 26, 2014, 09:58:24 AM »
Hey everyone,

Thanks to a couple generous forumites, the last couple of days I have been supplied with cherry pollen of Minnie royal and Royal Lee, low-chill cherries. I have been cross-pollinating them with the lowest chill peaches that i have, including UF Sun and Red Ceylon Peach.

In some cases with Prunus species hybrids, there is at some point incompatibility with the two species and the fruit either develops no seed, or the embryo is aborted at one point. I think this is most likely to happen with a cherry peach hybrid, so I am using Fairchild's lab to do embryo rescue on the hybrid if the embryo ends up aborting. I will choose the better hybrid and re-cross it with the cherry again until a low chill cherry arrives.

I will post some pictures in a couple minutes, as Postimage doesn't work on my iPod.

Hey everyone,

I wanted to run the idea with you guys to see if anyone would be interested, but I think it would be pretty cool if we could have a festival some time in the summer when it is peak fruiting season to celebrate how awesome this forum is. In it we could:

1. All have a giant potluck where we would be able to try all the fruits that we are dying to taste, or bring unique fruits of seedlings or plants that would not normally grow here, like Florida pomegranates or apples. We could bring from our yard fruits that others have not been able to taste. And I can try to order some fresh durian, mangosteens, maprang, etc. so everyone can taste.
2. We could have lectures from some of our forum members on interesting subjects like plant tissue culture, growing in pots, or greenhouse maintenance.
3. We would be able to meet all of our fellow fruit enthusiasts in person.
4. We could have an organized seed/plant/scion exchange where would be able to trade for things we are dying to get.
5. We could raise funds for the forum by charging a small admission rate like $5 per person, and have an auction at the end.

As for a venue I would talk to Chris to see if we can use the most appropriate place for such a festival, the Fruit and Spice Park. I would plan the whole thing out to make sure it is the best festival out there.

I thought it would be a nice idea. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Singapore!!!! What to do?
« on: January 15, 2014, 08:03:36 AM »
Hey everyone,

I just got an email from a school that I applied to in Singapore, and if my interview goes well and I make it to round 2, they will fly me over to Singapore in April to visit the school, for FREE! Meals, flights, hotel included for 3 days. I wanted to know if there is any way I can bring back the most amount of plants and seeds from Singapore, and what are their customs like? I want to try to bring back some grafted pulasans, rambutans, and if I can bring them back in my luggage. I already have import permits, but I do not have any phytosanitary certificates, would they have?

And what fruits will be in season?

Thanks,
Omar

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Asimina Hybrids
« on: January 03, 2014, 07:57:51 PM »
Hey everyone,

I was reading online of several asimina crosses that were made between asimina triloba and florida natives like asimina reticulata , asimina obovata, and asimina parviflora that were being held by the Kentucky State University when I further read that they were created by Har! So I wanted to know how was the fruit quality, growth habit, and if they would fruit in South Florida?

Thanks,
Omar Paez

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Rambutan Scion...FREE
« on: November 29, 2013, 12:34:01 PM »
Hey everyone,

My rambutan trees have grown too tall (9 feet), and I need to trim them down so they can fit in my greenhouse this winter. So would anyone like some rambutan scion? They are seedlings and I do not know if they are male or female, as they have not flowered yet, but will most likely flower this year or the next.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Leaf Problems
« on: November 11, 2013, 01:50:53 PM »

Over two years ago I planted some rambutan seeds from a Chinese market and in all that time they have grown less than one feet tall. They act as if they are mini bonsai and I give them fertilizer and micronutrients but they still look bad. Why?

Next, my rambutan tree has leaves that are curling up and it is the only tree that is doing this, as my seedlings are all fine

The worst so far is my macadamia tree, it is over 6 ft tall but all the new leaves come out dried and burnt.

And finally, the new growth of my rambutan are coming out crinkled.

So any recommendations as to what I should do?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / The Fruit and Spice Park Project
« on: November 09, 2013, 02:28:58 PM »
Hey everyone,

I was talking with Chris Rollins from the Fruit and Spice Park today about how things were doing over there, and at one point I told him that a lot of people would be interested in a full list of what they grow there. He said that he was making a list, but there is so little manpower there that it would be nearly impossible to do an accurate plot map of the entire 37 acres with only 3 people. So I offered him my help, and I told him I would ask if anyone else was interested in helping create a map and record of plants for the fruit and spice park. He is going to retire soon, and a lot of the knowledge that he has is going to be lost when he leaves, as a lot of people wont know what he planted. So I am asking for help from as many people as possible to accomplish getting as many things plotted and recorded, so who is in? Just think of all the fruit that will "accidently" fall when you were recording a plant.

Thanks,
Omar Paez

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Has anybody tried Freezepruf?
« on: November 03, 2013, 08:54:31 AM »
I have known of this spray for a couple of years now, but I have never needed it. Does anyone have any first-hand experience with this spray. Here is an excerpt from their page:

Freezepruf, a scientific-breakthrough– this eco-safe spray actually improves healthy plants’ natural cold tolerance by approximately 3° to 9° F, depending on the variety of plant and the duration/intensity of frost or freeze event.

Developed by botanists, FreezePruf™ protects the plant’s foliage and flowers, externally and systemically (throughout the plant) by enhancing both its natural “anti-freeze” like properties and its ability to survive ice crystal damage.

So, mangosteens anyone?

Just as the title says, anyone going to the edible garden festival? I am going tomorrow, last year they had quite a few fruit trees for sale.

Hi I was at Fairchild and I couldnt identify this garcinia, and I already checked the tag. If it helps it wasnt in the greenhouses, but in the rainforest near the lakes.
Thanks
