Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Best loquat varieties
« on: April 16, 2024, 02:08:27 AM »
Thanks Kevin. Yes, I like my Big Jim (brix=18-20) and Vista White (16-17). The Vista White has the whitest flesh of all the loquats I tried, and it isn't acidic if you let it ripen.

The KT1-KT31 series seedling trees are good, my highest brix is the KT6, and KT23. Both of these have brix reading above 20, KT6 & Kt23 came in with highest at 28 without the fruit being wrinkled and almost dried out.  The very good tasting named variety of loquats has brix = 14-17 for reference.

Kaz, any chance of having the KT6 scions available for purchase. My KT1 is almost ready to be pick. I can’t wait to taste it.

That tree is loaded. For some strange reason my kishu which I bought from Costco many years ago was dying and I had to dug it up from the ground then nurse it back to health in a container. Looks like it’ll make.

I just bought 2 airlayer wampees for an unbelievable price. One has 1 fruit and the other has none. Both are in 5 gallon pots. Both trees desperately need to be repot or put into the ground. I am confident they both will fruit next year.

I didn’t realize Wampee is part of citrus’s family and it’s also under quarantine. My friend gave me some fruits and I do have the seeds. I guess that’s option. It’ll take 5 to 7 Years to fruit.  Can Wampee be airlayer?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Hand Pollination - passiflora decaisneana
« on: September 10, 2023, 01:39:56 PM »
Your flower looks nice, congrats. Make sure to hand pollinate the next flower at 9am-10am or you may not get fruit set. I did learn the hard way that if you wait until after noon, it will not be good since I have so many bees, they take all the pollen from the flower before I can hand pollinate. I was wondering why some days I get hardly any pollen on the flower to use. Also, another good trick is to cover the flower immediately after you hand pollinate it so the bees don't try to remove the pollen you just put on the stigma. I use the organza bags (8"x12") since the flower is so large, works great.

Thanks Janet for the reply, then maybe I don't need to worry to much about the weight. My vine is growing over and through my blood orange tree and fence so I can use that as support for the new vines. This vine grows so fast, its hard to keep up with the number of flowers I need to hand pollinate every morning. Going outside again to do my routine to hand pollinate the flowers now.

Just hand pollinated one. Thanks Kaz for tip about using organza bag. The cutting is from you.

I’m interested in one or two. One of my small lychee tree just died from the heat.

Perhaps you’re correct that the taller one is the crossed pollinated since the leaves are different from the 2 smaller ones.

I planted a lemon zest seed and 3 shoots sprouted. I searched but still confused which of the 3 shoots is true to type. I want to separate them and discard the not true to type one. Thanks.

7 years to fruit. Is the tree air layer or seed. I have a 1 year old air layer and hoping it won’t take 7 years to fruit.

PMed. Are all the scions compatible with the sabra? Especially the yellow and blue.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Lane Late navel orange. Holy Moly
« on: July 14, 2023, 11:39:46 PM »
If you want a fruit to mature on the tree, and still let the trees highest chance for good growth, you can leave one fruit on the tree until it matures.  This is because all citrus draws its energy to grow and ripen from only the three closes leaves to the fruit.

I’ll adhere to your advice and just keep one fruit for tasting. Thx Millet.

This tree is flowering again. I’m going to just let it do its thing and see how many fruits will set.

Z4 is a hybrid correct?
Improved selection of the red hybrid.

Improved in which way? Does the fruit faster or better tasting. How long does it takes to fruit from seeds. I heard the red takes about 2 to 3 years to fruit. I have a 2 1/2 year old red that hasn’t fruit.

24
I read good things about AxP Jaboticaba. Looking for either seeds or seedling to add to my collection. Thx.
