Anybody know what these blemishes are? I noticed some on my crop last year and they ended up causing cracks/ruptures over time

Has anybody ever seen new growth with this red hue to it before? I’m growing a decent amount of varieties on the property and have either never seen this before or noticed it. This is on a recent chuchupaka graft

Looks promising

Been a while since I updated this but most trees are still alive and kicking. The changsha and citrange are long gone.

Yuzu in ground hit around 7' this year and had to be pruned back to fit in hoophouse

Xie Shan produced around 5 fruits and is still going strong

Citremon is taking off under protection and citrumelo is doing fine completely unprotected

Wow, that is great. Congrats! Xie Shan surviving at 7F really is something, protection or not. You are boosting my highest hopes about it. I am also going to get one.

If you don't mind my asking: how old is it? And were the fruits any good? And when did you pick them? As far as I know, the first crops of mandarins often tend to be of poor quality, and they show their real potential in their later years. It would be interesting to know how Xie Shan behaves in that regard, given that it is among the best tasting of all Satsumas.

Thanks!

I want to say this tree is on its third season in the ground and honestly the fruits were just ok so I'm hoping they improve with the years. I also picked these in late October if I remember correctly so maybe this year I let them go a little longer

You'd be good with hardy tamarillo for sure. I have one in ground under a poly tunnel in 7a

No heating? Also where in zone 7a?

Just some frost cloth and black garbage can filled with water, no heating. I'm in New Jersey

I’m starting to think they will start to decline if left in full shade over time. These trees have been in the ground for 15+ years and seeing more and more lower branch die back every year. Even being big trees these are still somewhat understory trees to some pines and chestnuts

Noticed first flower bud today

Unfortunately some come out really seedy. I have some varieties which make up to 7 seeds per fruit (small ones), and others that tend towards just 2-3. Worth doin some spitting for the fruit though, they're tasty.

I was surprised to find so many in there lol fruit wasn’t bad I think I could of gone another day with it on the tree

Nice!!! I also have a vernon and looking to graft onto it, YG would be my first choice.

Where did you get your YG scions?

This one has been in there for a few years now and flowers almost year round

What variety?

Vernon, just grafted a couple suebelle and YG scions on there recently too

Nothing crazy but it seems to be increasing in production every year. There’s probably around 9 on there right now with more setting with the new flowers. My biggest problem is this thing explodes with flowers in the dead of winter for me. So unless I go and hand pollinate in the greenhouse my primary source of pollinators is the ants who are pretty much only there due to the scale bugs that infest the tree during that time lol

It’s pretty much topped out at a little over 5 feet @ 15+ years old

Covered in small fruit right now
