Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: White Jade Pineapple
« on: October 16, 2018, 09:12:35 AM »
I found a new way to add edibles; convince my wife they are ornamental.

White Jade question:

Both of the plants below came from the same seller, in the same order in fact. Neither has spines on the leaves. But they look different to me. One has shorter leaves that are a bit more stout. The other has longer skinnier leaves that get blown and twisted easily.

Are they both White Jade?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Mulberry support?
« on: October 16, 2018, 09:03:38 AM »
No, it is doubtful it will "upright itself."  Mulberry needs to be trimmed a lot to keep in check. It is kind of a weeping tree, at least the cultivars I know. So if it grows out, it will droop. This can be good for berry production, but so can trimming. It is a good idea to trim anything out of picking distance unless you want a large bushy tree.

Need to be careful with carambola. Probably no one should be eating a ton of it.

I always cut the green parts off, like the edges/wings of the star points. Hope that helps.

I have a jujube (Indian or Thai) growing underneath a large bushy pongan tree. Gets lots of shade. Fruits pretty well, covered in flowers again. Another one, which is covered thickly by passion vines weighing it over, is covered in flowers. Seem to do well with a bit of shade.

Yes, they can grow well and fruit in partial shade.

I taste no astringency in the fruits off my Kari tree.

Starfruit is refreshing. A good one can be flavorful, in a somewhat subtle way. It feels good eating them, and they look really cool cut up on a plate.

It's nice to eat foods with different flavor profiles. If you are looking for something like a good mango in terms of sweetness, there are no starfruit cultivars that I know of that make the grade.

They are also beautiful trees. Mine is perhaps the prettiest tree in the yard.

Exciting! That distribution should provide useful results. Will be interesting to see what happens.

I'm not sure about thinning. I've done it to keep the fruit from crowding, but they seem to do fine either way. There might be other benefits of thinning (bigger fruit, uniform ripening?), or when plants aren't in ideal ripening conditions.

Could be time for a papaya experiment!

They look super healthy. They like water and to be well fed. Seems you are doing just that. You can tightly pack them, got a few that are stuffed between surinam cherries along the fence line and they are doing fine, producing.

I strongly recommend trying green/unripe papaya when your fruit get larger. Just julienne the skinned papaya, do whatever with the seeds (they are medicinal and also can be used as a spice, probably best when ripe). Marinate the thin papaya strips with lemon/lime/passion fruit, sugar, salt, pepper, and your favorite spices. I like some turmeric and maybe a little hot sauce. BAM! Better than the sweet ripe fruit imo, and you can use it as a side or bed for fish, chicken, or to accompany just about anything. Good by itself.

What I would pay for those mangoes this time of the year. I'm supremely jealous, and hungry.

Are there any benefits to growing in a larger container? larger fruit? more fruit? quicker time to maturity?

Mine are scattered between 3 and 7 gal pots. One is in a partially filled 15 gal. Think its time to downsize.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Mangosteen tree near sunny window?
« on: September 27, 2018, 11:01:07 PM »
Have only kept purple mangosteen indoors for brief periods during storms and a cold spell or two when smaller. My guess is that it will not do well indoors due to the low humidity. Also, if it is not used to any sun, direct sun in the morning for several hours might be a bit much at first.

If you could partially shade it (progressively less) with another plant or something else, and mist daily, might get through the winter okay.

They require substantial pesticide treatment to grow well and produce.

Need to dig up a Satsuma myself. Gets tore up by leaf miners and who knows what else. Has hardly grown after 2.5 years in ground, a few flowers, and no fruit. Leaves are scarce and do not look good.

Since I can get good citrus at the grocery anyway, want to grow something tasty and that's not readily available.

HD near my house used to carry it. Now, they almost exclusively sell Miracle Grow soil products. Kind of sad, so many other soil sources out there. Dr. Earth was good, also like Fox Farms.

like totally different fruit. diversity in mango flavor profiles is immense. texture is usually much better too.

It looks a bit like a garcinia, but do not see all the leaves being in pairs opposite each other from the stem. So, questionable it is actually a garcinia.

Not a jabo.

Maybe citrus

Haven't tried it yet, but have heard p. nitida is mostly sweet. Mine just started flowering, hope it sets fruit and can report back.
