I have a disease! Need ID
« on: January 25, 2012, 10:33:09 AM »
I have noticed these nuggets on some of my leaves.  They are dry and pick out easily, but they reappear. On leaves (top and bottom).  They start off yellow/gold and age to black.
I need an ID and info on how to treat  please.

I have similar ones here in WPB FL.  Mine are more symetrical with even craters and a light pink coloring. I believe mine are a type of scale?

Yes, your's sounds like scale- when you squish yours, do they leave a yellow mush from inside?

Yes that looks like scale. Never seen that type here though, unusual shape. Usually what is recommended for scale is a hortiultural oil spray. If your plant is small you can just manually remove them.

I can try treating it like scale. I will look for Merritt if it gets worse.  For now I am just picking it off.  It is dry when picked off (no yellow gush inside like with the usual white scale).  It comes in all sorts of shapes, and seems to grow by adding additional bumps.  Feels almost like a hard mushroom.
Here is another picture with a little one and a larger growth:

That is truly bizzare. I wonder if it could be some type of egg layed by cateripillar or other bug? Does your camera do ultra macro closeups?

It is a white sapote.  But I have seen a few on other types of trees.

I will try taking a close up picture with the other camera.

Swallowtail butterflies like to lay eggs on citrus and citrus family, like white sapote. Round thing could be an egg, but other weird shaped thing????

do you notice shiny honeydew secretion on leaves, or sooty mold associated with sucking insects?

Good luck!

Truly bizzare. Looks extra-terrestrial!  :o Could it be a fungus? I'll try to post your photos on pestnet newsgroup and see if someone knows what it is.

Congrats. You're the first person to grow Coral outside of water and even on a leaf of a tree!

Haha. I was actually thinking it looks like a closed up dendro when I first saw the pic.

I feel so lucky now to have this odd-looking thing....not!  Thanks for the ideas/comments. I think it probably is a "plant" based thing- fungus or such.  Hopefully Oscar's people will come up with an ID, but until then, I think I will try a fungicide spray.

What ever they are, they seem to have good taste- they are on my grafted white sapote but not on my crappy seedling one that is right next to it.    ::)
