Tarap vs Marang
« on: October 19, 2019, 12:17:53 PM »
Starting to get get dizzy with all the similar sounding, unrelated fruits. Marang, maprang, mangaba, mangosteen, mango. Quite confusing, would be good if there could be some kind of resolution on this...
Eugenia luschnathiana = CURUIRI.    Talisia esculenta = PITOMBA
I do not recommend people deal with Fruit Lovers, Prisca Mariya or Fernando Malpartida

No need for a resolution. Common names will usually vary by location. What’s important is keeping the scientific name and cultivar names correct.

Artocarpus odoratissimus, also called terap, marang, johey oak, green pedalai, madang, tarap, or timadang, is a tree in the mulberry and fig family Moraceae. It is native to Borneo, Palawan, and Mindanao Island, and is closely related to the jackfruit, cempedak, and breadfruit trees which all belong to the same genus, Artocarpus.

I'm not about to tear-ap my plans for a nomenclature overhaul, I guess I will now just focus on changing maprang to gandaria. the fruit isn't even endemic to Thailand so bugger their name.

I have never seen this fruit in Thailand. Don't know why.

All the good maprangs are thai and the name dominates outside of Thailand now so it will be tough to change.
