Abiu seeds - Just planted . . .
« on: October 03, 2020, 03:30:18 AM »
Gentle TFF Members,

I understand that Abiu seeds are very shortlived and need to be planted immediately, about two inches deep.

But how should the seeds be oriented in the soil?

Horizontally?

Vertically with one end up; which end?

I'm sure someone on here will know.

TIA

Paul M.

I just grew 4 Abiu seeds(very fresh, straight from the fruit) before winter in South east Queensland, Australia, and I did nothing special for them . I scarified the seeds and soaked them for 3-4 days in water. I then planted them laying on their side, about an inch deep in pots. Germination in about 2 weeks. Survived the winter and are planted in the ground now.

the easy way is just to lie most seeds down as they would fall and two inches is about twice as deep as they should be. Don't spear them in the soil. They last pretty well but not as long as canistel as the seed shell is a bit thinner. If they dry to much they start to rattle inside but still can be ok for a while. They rot is kept too moist also.

Thanx All!

Good advice, most of it obviously from experience . . .

It is all very much appreciated.

Cheers!

One last question....

I just finished planting the abiu seeds in a standard 5 gallon pot that had been cut down to half-height.  Planted them 1-inch deep. (Thanks again for all the advice.)

But now I'm uncertain how quickly and how deeply the roots will grow soon after they've sprouted.  Knowing that will help me understand how soon they will need to be moved up into a deeper pot.

Suggestions, please.

Pretty easy to sprout. I usually put them on moist vermiculite or paper towel in a Tupperware with the nonshiny side (you know what I mean lol) facing up. Once it pops, I move to a pot.

Freshly planted abiu seeds from the fruit took about 2 weeks to sprout. As for moving them up to bigger pots, I would wait until they get to a big enough size to where you can repot them without breaking the stem and stressing them too much.
