Name That Solanum! ...please
« on: March 10, 2022, 08:23:31 PM »
Hello everyone. Let's play the Name That Solanum Game. 1st one to accurately identify this plant wins seeds of this interesting plant, when it fruits. Looks like that shouldn't be too long of a wait.

The fruit is supposed to be tasty.

Solanum alternopinatum

Welcome to the forum kittycatus! Now that's an entrance. =)

I believe you are correct. Forgot the species, can't find the old pot with name written. Had bought this from a site that is no longer up, (Queen of the Amazon - Brian Laufer). Was going to bug him and ask, and will to confirm, but pretty sure that is what it is. Thank you very much.

I will update you when fruits are ripe, and send you seeds free of charge/free shipping at that time. Will be in touch.

Thanks for playing Name That Solanum!

Hey Roblack,

I have those growing as well as solanum pachyandrum. Seeds were purchased from Queen of the Amazon. I found what I think is Brian's new site. Raindance seeds. (raindanceseeds.squarespace)

Think this is solanum pachyandrum. Just noticed fruits. Have at least 2 vines growing together, and did some hand pollination.

Got you some seeds/fruit when they are ready Kittycatus! =)

Beautiful! How big did yours get before fruiting, Roblack? I picked up a pair of rooted cuttings from Grassy Knoll before the cold hit and have been overwintering them, and they went from about 8 inches tall to four feet in the last couple of months (had to do a few up pots and make them a trellis). Wondering if they're going to flower indoors at this rate...

Thanks! They are pretty monstrous at this point CeeJey. In ground over a year and have been flowering since last spring, just now setting fruit. The vines are draping over a jatropha tree that is about 8 - 10 feet tall, and wider than that.  I would guess 16 - 20 feet each, or more total length.

Wow, what monsters! I'm going to have to pick a tree for them to climb up when it gets warmer, I reckon. Maybe they can fight the dragonfruit for draping space on the jujube  ;D
