What bananas should I plant?
« on: July 02, 2022, 03:34:14 PM »
I can't eat the usual Cavendish due to allergies, but I can eat other bananas.

First I'm looking for a banana I tried years ago that to me tasted like sweet pumpkin. Do any of you have thoughts on which one it was?

Next I would like to know what variety the red ones in stores are.

Finally this is the lineup I have planned so far. What do you guys think and can it be improved?
Ice cream
Misi Luki
Pineapple
Kakopo
Pisang Ceylon

I recommend Dwarf Namwah & Dwarf Red.  They don't need propping up, and do well in Winter.  At least, here in SoCal

I love Namwah. A quick google search says it has a bit of a red delicious apple, melon, and jackfruit taste. To me, Namwah is sweeter than cavendish but also has a good sub acid component. It’s a dense fruit too. Very tasty.

The nice thing about Namwah is that they grow big racks being fed with only yard waste and compost where other varieties want lots of fertilizer. While they do have thick stalks, I lost a monster rack to wind last year so they may still need propping. Mine sends out the flower at 8-9 feet

Namwah is sold as "Thai banana" at the Asian Supermarkets.  Sweet, w/ a good amount of acidity.  Very delicious

Namwah sounds like it might be the one I tried years ago. And coincidentally I have a store near my that sells Thai bananas I'll have to get some and try them. Than you!

Just remember, those supermarket bananas are picked extremely early

Dwarf Brazilian - almost like Manzano, but less apple, great variety.
I agree with Namwah and Ice Ceam or Blue Java
Mulberries: Pakistani, White Shahtoot, Thai Dwarf, Worlds Best, Jan’s Best, Valdosta, Maui
Banana: Dwarf Namwah, Ice Cream, Unknown
Mangos: Cogshall, Honey Kiss, Neelam, Ice Cream
passion fruit
Mysore raspberries
Evergl tomatos
Hass Avocado
Jamaican cherry
Barbados cherry
Sugar Apple

I suggest dwarf Nam wah or Orinoco (Burro) banana. The Orinoco is very hardy.

I have one year-old Namwah and Blue Java bananas that are just now pushing out fruit stalks.
Getting pretty excited.
Which one of these varieties is Ice cream?

Blue Java is also known as ice cream for its sweet vanilla taste.

I have now tried Thai bananas and they are indeed great. They aren't the mystery pumpkin one, but definitely a great one to eat. I have however decided to hold off because the grocery store near me always has them available and I would rather put my space to use for bananas I can't buy in store 😉

Not any more. I just have a few pair of breeders that I keep as pets in flight cages.  :)

I've thought about keeping them, but like with most birds haven't. I have a focus on red rumps and I don't e that changing unless I win the lottery and buy acreage.

Yeah, and they have a lovely sound too. Melodic even.
