Loquat cold tolerance
« on: January 23, 2023, 11:58:44 PM »
There is a huge atleast 13 year old loquat tree near my house outside, it has no protection, doesnt get watered by anybody only rain, no fertilizer.

So i was wondering at what temperature it doesnt fruit, cuz all those years it has been fruiting except maybe 1 or 2 very cold years and i wanted to know what temperature makes it not fruit so i can have a comparison for other fruit trees i want to plant and know the lowest my area goes.

I live in north greece, north blocked by a mountain, south blocked by a mountain, 9a.

Thanks in advance!

If we have a very cold night it can affect the blooms on any tree that is
flowering. Last year we had 2 very cold nights in the end of January and
I didn't get loquat fruit and I am in 9b. I also didn't get white sapote
fruit from one tree that was flowering? Sometimes the tree reflowers
but not always. You never know with the timing of the coldest nights

In zone 8 Alabama where temps get down to 19 F consistently, I do still see loquats bloom and fruit.

I am in 9b and there is a loquat across the street. I would say it makes fruit about 75% of the time. If we get a really sharp cold snap from Feb - April, the fruit can get roasted off. A shame that the fruit quality is inedible so I am working hard on top working it.

Min have seen 10f with little damage. Of course up north it's hard to set fruit due to late frosts though. So it'll technically grow, but less fruit if any.
