Cherimoya season on Pine Island!
« on: May 03, 2025, 02:20:41 PM »
Here are some photos of the cherimoya fruited by John Painter here in SW FL, thanks to the help of hurricane Milton! They had an amazing flavor with overtones of berries and classic cherimoya taste. It’s grafted from a cultivar from California, the tags were lost in the hurricane so we’re unsure of the variety. It seems to be a very freely flowering variety. The fruits were a little over half a lb.

That’s pretty cool. Did the tree produce a lot of fruit?

There were around 7 of them.  :) It’s not too big of a tree yet, about 2 years old since he grafted it.

That is awesome! I guess this shows that they can fruit here if the fruits develop over our cool season (due to leaf stripping in the fall) and there is not a significant freeze. Zinc sulfate spray is used to defoliate peaches and help induce dormancy. I imagine it would work to strip Cherimoya leaves as well. That way we don't have to wait until the next hurricane.

Thanks, that is good to know. It will be interesting to see if any fruits from this bloom hold to maturity. Sounds like it should make a good parent for breeding.
