Author Topic: Pruning Jaboticaba!! M. cauliflora and M. cauliflora hybrid (Read 36675 times)

OK Adam, you convinced me and inspired me! Will prune this jaboticaba tree that is 20+ years old and i've never once pruned. I'll try to take before and after photos.

Adam...I remember you going into a lengthy explanation on yahoo as to why you prune your jabs in this manner. Would you please share those explanations here? Again...I'm sure more folks are interested in jabs but are scared off by the length of time it takes to begin fruiting. Thanks.

Yes Jay,

the reason to prune them good and early (especially certain varieties with fruits on wood thicker than 2 inches or so), to establish the wood you have selected to fruit at an early period in the trees life, thereby forcing the tree to grow thicker on the branches you've chosen to keep, and fruit.

Don't let suckers (little branches that will make your jabo turn into a bush with no light penetrating old branches) over run your branches you've selected to fruit!

So that little Red Jaboticaba will fruit sooner, with less energy being devoted to vegetative growth in branches, and more to old wood and flower formation on the caulis.

I also keep tips pruned to encourage branching, instead of long shoots, like in before picture of Sabara in ground.

PLEASE NOTE! the wood is hard as hell, and you'll need a saw for best pruning method of old large branches (bigger than 2inches), they can easily bend the best and largest loppers, and also grow in crazy angles that can make loppers impossible to use! Get a good pruning saw if you want to prune a big one!! Oscar...i think this means u...LOL

Have you ever heard of jaboticabas fruiting from the tips when the plants are young?. Both Robert (Stressbaby) and my jaboticaba fruited from the tip after 2-3 years in a pot. I believe Robert's went on to fruit from the wood. for now, mine is still fruiting (only 2-3 fruits) from the tips.
I will try and take a pic of my jab and get your pruning advice

Hi Adam, your reasoning on pruning red jaboticaba makes sense to me. I would just add that regular jaboticaba fruits abot 3x slower than red jaboticaba, so you many not want to prune them quite as early as the red.
I've never met a tree i could not prune with my Fiskar ratcheted lopper with tungsten blade. But yes some branches might be at an odd angle to get those large loppers into. Thanks for the advice.

Yes!

I have seen this with only trees that are in too deep of shade! As I would wager 1,000,000 GBP if I had it, that this is the case with the tree in the photo...with fruits at tips...have seen them fruit all the way up to the smallest of branches, in about 50% shade though, still fruiting heavily.

Good luck!

Be careful not to over prune if your tree is in a marginal climate! like 25F regularly! This will set the tree back!

What a disappointment! I thought that you being Mr. Jaboticabo would have all of these varieties!!

Never realized there were so many. So what type of jab did we eat at say...Whitmans or at Fruit & Spice Park? The flesh itself was pretty good but if I recall correctly, the skin was very thick and not very good. This is my wife's biggest complaint about this fruit. What variety do you normally see offered for sale at nurseries? Thanks for the run down...course...all it really did was confuse me more!

Most places only sell the M. caulifora. Some places have the M. vexator. I think everywhere you've probably only had the caulifora. I think sabara is the common variety of caulifora. Now that people like Adam and Berto have the other species, maybe nurseries will start carrying them too. Excalibur said it has the coronata (well, he said he had one with giant fruit, so I assumed coronata but it may be something else). Oscar has made the hybrid seeds readily available now and maybe more people will start selling them.

So murahilin, I bought mines in pine island and Lara nursery, I have no idea what they are. Can I safely assume they are m cauliflora? Would a picture help or that will be too difficult with jaboticabas?
Also Adam thank you for the pruning tips. I pruned one of the two, and will likely prune the other one when I plant it inground.

Please help - do you recommend pruning my jaboticabas now or wait till there's more leafy growth? i don't think they were getting quite enough water at the nursery so they don't look as good as they should - they look quite scraggly as you can see from below pic. Its summer here, so will pruning be beneficial or should i wait a while longer?

Actually looking at my notes, the one that nurseries most carry, is not M cauliflora, its M. jaboticaba.

The two are almost indistinguishable to the untrained eye (and even to a trained eye!)

M. jaboticaba fruits are always sweet, never acid (where cauliflora has acid varieties like Ponhema)
Also caulifora is generally a shorter tree, with slightly larger leaf and fruit.

Good luck telling the difference! Chances are, it's M. jaboticaba, sabarah...Hate to break it to you all, but the trees you have from PIN, Hopkins, and most other nurseries in USA, are mislabeled as M. cauliflora.

I'm sure I'll catch heat for saying this, but you can suck my "assu paulista" pulp.

Your tree from PIN is M. jaboticaba, and chances of finding your requested specimens are slim. "How badly do you want them?", is a question of paramount concern.
