Freeze Drying Fruit Thread
« on: September 22, 2023, 06:14:23 PM »
Hey not much goes on about freeze drying fruits. What have you freeze dried?
My friend has a freeze dryer so I'll give him some of my starfruits and other stuff when they are ready.
What fruit freeze dries well.
If you want to send me fruit to freeze dry, I'm all down for that!

We intend to get a freeze dryer once we have more fruit production. I am very interested in other peoples experiences. I would imagine starfruit would not fare well, because of the high water content. I'd test it out though!

I love the durian sticky rice cubes we got a costco a while back.

Lychee freeze dries extremely well. It is the closest thing to fresh taste--just sweeter. A neighbor has a freeze dryer and we got some of our lychees back after they were dried. My Dad liked them so much that he wants to get a freeze dryer now!

I have put starfruit in my regular dehydrator. The taste was great, but the peel and "core" were tough. The texture would have been better if I had done spears and peeled them, but them they wouldn't have had the cute star shape.

The freeze dried figs I tried were the worst dried fruit I've ever eaten. Like eating Styrofoam. And I know they were good figs.

I have no interest in a freeze drier. A normal dryer works great for everything I've tried it on: figs, stone fruit, grapes.

the first time I tried Jabos was freeze dried from Flying Fox at my buddies house Ive been hooked ever since.
comparing the 2 against each other isnt really fair as the output created is totally different products both have there place as valuable equipment for growers.  Freeze dryer can turn any kind of fruit juice you can put on trays and turn into mouth watering treats that dont lose any nutritional value and can be stored long term.  The big difference is the lock in of valued nutrients a dehydrator just cant achieve with that said I love and use both.  but if i could only pick 1 the Freeze would be my pick.  Cheers

Fruit nut, that is interesting about figs not being good. On the flip side, when I put lychee in my regular dehydrator the results were poor. However, lychee flavor changes significantly when heated.

Nice responses. I've seen Adam's videos, and his freeze dried stuff looks amazing. I have a star fruit just about ready and may just yeet it in there and see what happens.

I'll definitely do lychee next year.

I have some mangos almost ready so I'll probably try those also. I remember trying some at the store and they were amazing.

My dehydrated LSU and brown turkey figs were out of this world. Straight candy
