What's your favorite extremally vigorous mango tree?
« on: August 14, 2023, 11:15:28 AM »

There are threads for days on here asking for people's favorite dwarf/compact/condo variety, but I can't recall anyone asking for opinions on the opposite end of the growth spectrum. I'm taking down a big laurel/water oak that provides good shade, but is too close to things that matter to me (Hurricane Ian snapped some big limbs on it, and we didn't get hit that hard). I'm looking for options on trees that go more or less straight up, rather than spreading, to replace it. Thick/dense canopy would also be great, but I'm guessing that doesn't jibe with my primary desire.

Anybody have some suggestions they could share?

Thanks B. TAF says it's a dense, spreading tree (vs vertical). What's been your impression of how it grows?

'Tog Bi Con'. Not your typical SE Asian mango. Grows tall first then wide. More vigorous than 'Ivory'. And Possibly 'Valencia Pride'. 3-4lbs monster size mangoes in clusters of 2-4. Orange fleshed fruit that taste like Wrigley's 'Juicy Fruit' bubble gum/ jack fruit. Seed thin like NDM. Absolutely no fruit splitting from my 8-9 yr old tree. Some branches may need support during season. Haven't been able to crack a brix past 22 as of yet.

No where to plant it ...but at least I got it. ;)

Not sure how the canopy looks on a full grown tree, but LZ is vigorous.

I have a Cac branch grafted in on another tree, really love the flavor, but it again sounds like more of a spreader than skyscraper. I'll probably give it a go if nothing else tops my interest, since I already have scions I can take.

Tog Bi Con is a new one to me, seems there was some discussion about it a decade ago on here. Some said it was comparable to Ivory, but there wasn't much info.

I do have Phoenix grafted in on the same tree, really liked the one I got to try. I had LZ, but a neighbor's oak tree came down on it...really upsetting. Maybe I'll do the biggest cocktail tree ever; Cac, Phoenix and LZ all together! Doesn't look like TAF sells LZ scions anymore, those might be a challenge to locate.

PPK (LM) trees are "vigorous, vertical growers with dense foliage," as Alex says on his website.  I can attest to that fact.

Would Orange Sherbet do about the same as PPK, or does it go more wide than tall?

OS is pretty vigorous here, with dense canopy. Nice shaped tree.

Super Julie canopy is spreading but I really like the fruit. But the reports I'm getting within the co-op is that Giselle is upright and very vigorous. Good chance TAF already has some of those grafted.

That would be awesome INaba! Took me forever to get LZ to take, probably near 2 dozen tries, seems like LZ scions don't take well after a few days in transit. I'm in North County, near downtown, but I'm always driving; I'll PM you.

The OS I have on Atalufo rootstock is indeed very vigorous and very dense. Going on it's 4th year grafted in and I still can't get it to hold fruit, it just wants to grow. I girdled a few branches that caused it to flower, but it shed the fruit and went right back to vegging when they were pea-sized.

Super Julie does sound interesting, I think that every time I read about it on TAF, maybe I'll graft a branch now I'm not worried about a tree getting too big. Have you tried Giselle? Seems there was some suspicion it was being hyped as the hot new variety on the block.

I girdled a few branches that caused it to flower, but it shed the fruit and went right back to vegging when they were pea-sized.

over 30 yrs ago bought my property/house and it had a pig pen area that nothing wanted to grow in and still not sure why.
About 4 years ago planted a OS in that spot and it proceeded to send out blooms and fruit for 2 years in a row although only 3 ft tall. I've been throwing fertilizer on it and I got a little growth this year after picking off all but 1 fruit and fell off very early this year.

I took scions and grafted seedling trees this year and they are growing fine in other locations on the property.

So, yours grows with no fruit and mine fruits with almost no growth due to something in the soil at that spot.... So, if you like to experiment add too much of almost any mineral or change the ph to less desirable levels and see if you can get growth stoped without killing the tree and I bet it will bloom and set fruit next year... Just IMO.

It sounds like you are in love with Valencia Pride.  I am not keen to high brix number as long as some sweetness and heavy production. The size of the fruit  tickles me. I wonder how it will grow in SoCal and handle disease.

Alex has said that OS is less vigorous than PPK, and I think more wide than tall.

Kent is the most vertical none spreading variety I know. I have two mature trees of Kent and by far of the 30 or so varieties grown they are way taller than wide. They have very strong genetics to form vigorous central leaders, side branches on my two specimens are dwarf in comparison. Think of Italian spruce trees used to line drives, tall and skinny. Mine were almost destroyed in Irma. After topping and resetting have resume same growth pattern albeit with multiple leaders.

I can think of a few Kent trees around here that match your description, one in particular is almost as tall as the oak I'm removing (scraggly, though). I do like Kent and how late it comes in, but I already get enough of them off the ground around town each season.

VP is good, fruit size is amazing, but it's like Kent to me. I like to eat it, but I'm never wowed.
