Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: 2025 Florida Avocado Season
« on: June 28, 2025, 12:46:50 PM »
Has anybody harvested a 2025 season avocado yet? Donnie, Simmonds, Dupuis... ApMay?

Donnies have been coming off of the trees since June 1st.  The fruit is sizing up to 25oz (~1.6lbs).

Some Arue and Dupuis should be ready by now.  Simmonds just hit the schedule but they likely need a little more time to size up.
Talk to us about Dupuis when you start picking them.  Is it really as great as they say?  They say it bears lightly.  What does that mean for a homeowner?  Is it worth growing?

For overall productivity, disease resistance, tree size: can’t beat a Pickering. I find the flavor classic but usually pretty outstanding. I ate the first tree ripened one from my tree a few days ago, and it was excellent.
Although it may not be a "top-tier" mango in general, individual fruit can have outstanding flavor.  If you're eating a few different mangos at one sitting, I find you can appreciate the distinctive flavor of each, and that includes Pickering.  We're lucky we can have that variety in Florida.  I guess it was the last video on FRUITFUL TREES YT where he had a group of inexperienced tasters, who were saying that if think what you buy in a store gives you the true flavor of mangos, you're badly mistaken.

I wanted to make some additional comments about CeciLove, as this was my first year with fruit.  I had a situation where I had to strip the tree of all green fruit so only one had been allowed to tree-ripen.  In spite of this, the fruit ripened up well.  The flavor is a bit more complex than SweetTart, and it doesn't have as much of the tart kick to it.  The tree has great growth characteristics so far.  It seems to be slow-growing and compact, so very manageable.  The only slightly negative feature of the fruit is the large seed.  Alex S had recommended this variety to me as a SweetTart alternative.  I'm glad he did!  And I'm happy to pass on the recommendation.  :)

Monroe looks like this.  They should be whoppers in six months.

The tree set about 100 fruit, but has dropped around 70.  First year with fruit.

Im always shocked when I read this kind of stuff. I pruned my tree with no gloves or anything and got sap all over my arm and had no reaction at all. I guess everyone reacts differently

You are blessed with anti-alien kryptonite genetics if you are unaffected by the sap.
Me, too.  And all my grandparents came from Poland.  No mango trees in Poland.  Maybe that's why.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Mango Mania at Xain's June 21
« on: June 22, 2025, 08:18:31 PM »
What a great time. Xain's dad made barbecue sandwiches, yucca, rice, beans and mango salsa. They served drinks and tons of mango samples with a nice variety. 0-15, Super Julie and Ice Cream were standouts for me. Xain brought out a Cempedak fruit for sampling but I couldn't hear exactly what it was.

I met all kinds of cool people and it wasn't very crowded at all. They even gave out free mangoes near the end, everybody got at least one.

Sounds like it was a really nice event. 👍
It was!  ;D

Wish I had seen this sooner! There's no shortage of Floridians looking to taste new mango varieties, so I hope they do this again next year.
It looks to be an annual event.

The best $5 I've ever spent!  This was a stellar event.  Just the right size crowd even though it was located at the western fringe of West Palm Beach, more than 30 minutes from downtown.  Plenty of mango samples--15 to 20 varieties?--and no limit to how much you could sample.  A much better tasting in every respect than the 2024 Mango Fest.  I really liked Super Julie, O-15, and Ice Cream, but the best example of an average variety is always better than a poor sample of an outstanding variety.  There was other food to purchase and eat, as well.  Rob and family (great people) did an absolutely awesome job! ;D  Kudos.  The attendees were a mellow and polite group of people of all ages from infants to "old folks."  No pushing, shoving, rioting. ;)  And no, Paul N. did not show up to make a video.  Observing the Sabbath?  Forgive me for not taking pictures.  Next year I'd love to see (try) Orange Essence, USDA Himsagar, Cotton Candy, Sugarloaf, Fruit Punch, Fruit Cocktail, and Sunrise--to name a few--or any combination of those, and any Indian mango.

How many people were needed to pick those?

Just 5 guys. They picked all that in around 7 hours.
And Mexican, I'd bet.  God bless the farm workers!  No one works harder.

It was raining lychees today!  My neighbor was hitting the branches with the long picker pole, and they were so ripe that they detached and fell easily.

Some good news.  (And I do hate the pigs, as I hate the local iguanas.)  I ate my first ever Cecilove this week.  It was a milder version of SweetTart, fiber-free with great color and high brix.  Is it a "top-tier" contender?  The best versions of it could very well be.

My Honey Kiss had 2 mangos last year as a 3-year-old that was re-located.  This year it's about 10 ft. tall, blossomed twice, and is loaded with fruit.

Anyone around Miami have some white sapote fruit for sale? I'd like to try one but I can't really find it for sale.

Fruit & Spice Park has multiple white sapote trees
He should go there, for sure!

Fruit and Spice Park

Went and had a great time. Thank you!
Did you find any additional mangos in the area or anywhere else?

The picture doesn't show Wurtz avocados, for what that's worth.  Not very helpful of them!

Does anyone in this neck of the woods--M/D, Broward, PBC--have this tree?  ( And how much do you love it? ??? :) )

I’ve heard about removing the canopy when the roots are disturbed/damaged. We do this with mango trees that are downed in hurricanes. My keitt mango tree never recovered but avocados are stronger trees
I've always thought of mangos as being stronger, more resilient trees, but I guess they have to be healthy and have all their needs met.

Removing the same percent of canopy as roots has been a pretty solid plan for all my transplants. Man, I severely cut some trees back in my move, both roots and canopies. The vast majority of them made it. So sorry you have to take your plants out :(
Thanks, Kevin.

I moved some 6 ft tall trees it was kinda hard because you need 25-45gal pots to keep the rootball mostly intact and then it’s very heavy
I know trying to keep a rootball is important.  That's where I might have some difficulty.  I'll instruct my son to bring the largest pots he has available.  I'm not so concerned about the mango trees.  It seems next to impossible to kill a mango tree as long as you're minimally conscientious.

Easy, just dig around it to where you get 90% of the roots since it is a small tree.

I just dug up a small 8yr old avocado tree last year from a guy's yard ($60) that wasn't looking to healthy, wimpy, leaves looked like they were not healthy and small. Took 10 minutes to dig up, didn't have many roots at all. I stuck it in a larger pot (free from my nursery buddy) and now it has recovered and doing well. Planning to graft it up with Seedless Krueger and make it worth money ($200).
Great!  Thanks for your help.  (You, too, Eric.)

What do you think the success rate is for digging up and re-planting three-year-old avocado trees of the West Indian race?  Any special instructions to improve chances of success?

Probably has to do with the Mexican cartels putting bullets in the heads of people.  Favorite targets: politicians, journalists, environmentalists, farmers.

I think he means mexican vs guatemalan vs west indian avocado.

My personal opinion is guatemalan is much better than mexican avocados.
I know, but I couldn't resist.  Mexico has a President for the Distrito Federal (Mexico City), but the rest of the country is ruled by the cartels.  At least the corruption in our own country doesn't usually involve killing people--stealing from everyone yes, but killing no!
