Pepper plant is fairly easy to grow in a pot. I grew one to fruition here in Maryland in 2 year frame. I would recommend a medium size pot at least, and give it a trellis, but it doesn't mind rewrapping. I've seen farms of black pepper where they grow up vertical poles, no other structures. They can take lower temperatures, but not for long. I agree they're extremely decorative... gives that tropical feel the way the leaves glisten and dark green.

Yup, everything I have read says shade....they are a vine though so make sure you give it enough room/keep it in check.

http://plantogram.com/product/black_pepper/  what plantogram says about growing black pepper vines. Looks like container growing for me due to it liking acid soil plus being too cold sensitive

Black pepper is not as vigorous as say passionfruit.  It can be grown on a fence, large trellis or on a chupah type structure which would be very decorative as well as functional.

Had to google chupah...That's my newly acquired knowledge for the day!  ;)

Thanks, Brandon. That thing is beautiful. You must have some nice soil. That ilama looks fantastic. I think the soil is the key. They seem to be averse to both high ph and wet soils. I've pretty much given up here. You'll need to post us on the progress.

not sure if they're averse to high pH...the trees in the redlands always look healthy...and I don't think they drench them with chelated Fe.

Looks pretty good. If he was near me I would buy a couple of honey.
Mike, I wish you luck on your business. I saw the video John Kholer did at your place. :)

Interesting. It's been a few years, but the ones at the fruit and spice park always looked really rough.

Ya, I think the rain has something to do with it...

Maybe you saw them during a drought?

I remember the posh te looked like hell during a drought, but as of lately with all the rain it looks great...maybe the same for the illama?  Or they drench them?
