Title: Will Pear scions graft onto any other tree in the same family?
Post by: FV Fruit Freak on January 15, 2022, 09:02:39 PM
Will pears graft onto anything else? Pears and Loquats are in the same family...any chance theyre compatible? Id really like to grow pears but would like to save space and graft them onto something else, if possible?

You might try winter banana (apple) interstock, I've heard you can graft various things to loquats using it as interstock, so it's worth a try.

It is possible, I graft pear trees on mespilus germanica very well. But some varieties are more compatible.
Pear trees are compatible with: mespilus germanica, cydonia, crataegus ( monogyna ) etc.

However, in general, one should avoid grafting a deciduous fruit tree onto an evergreen fruit tree

on the last part, is it also not recommendable the other way around? I have grafted loguat plants onto quince and i know in warmer parts of the world the quince will probably not go in  a deep winter sleep, but in my climate they do ! Will this be a problem somehow in the long run ?

No, unless the variety (loquat) is not temperature resistant enough for you. Otherwise, it's not a problem, you can graft evergreen citrus trees onto the poncirus tree. So you see this example shows that it is not a problem.
