Learn About Growing Citrus Class
« on: March 08, 2017, 09:32:45 PM »
Today I attended a Learn About Growing Citrus class at the University of California, Hansen Research and Extension Center, Santa Paula, CA.

Dr. Faber is the soils/water/subtropical crops advisor for Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties.

His primary crop involvements are avocado and citrus and is currently evaluating various subtropical tree varieties for their economic viability in coastal environments. He also studies soil and water quality issues.

The class was mainly about how to grow and care for citrus trees. We also got to taste a variety of the citrus growing at the Hansen Research and Extension Center.

The tasting winner was the Page Citrus Hybrid.

It so happen while I was away attending the class, I received my disease free Pomelo budwood from the Citrus Clonal Protection Program http://www.ccpp.ucr.edu.

I am interested in adding Pomelo to my garden and am new to grafting citrus.

So, I was interested in the Pomelo growing at the Hansen Research and Extension Center.

Is pomelo bitter like grapefruit or sweet? I've never had one. Why are they popular on this forum since most of the fruit, or large part of it is albedo?

I like the taste of Pomelo much better. I was surprised that there is little or no bitter taste. It does have a grapefruit taste.

Page is really good tasting. The only downside to it is the size of the fruit varies
so much from very small to navel orange size.

Very interesting post. Do you remember what other varieties were in the taste test and what places they came in ? Thanks. Tom

Its not surprising that Page Mandarin won the taste contest.  It is a really great cultivar, I have two Page trees.  Another variety that wins a lot of taste contests is Xie Shan.  The Citrus Expo that Tom and I attended in Alabama had a citrus taste contest, the winner of that contest was Xie Shan.

I did not take notes or taste the more common lemons and oranges.

The blood orange was the worst I tasted.

To be fair, not all of the collections varieties were represented and some that were, may have been picked too early.

It seems like the Shiranui/Sumo/Dekopon is the current rage in Southern California.

I just tried doing a bunch of inverted T-bud grafts.

I have my fingers crossed.
