Title: ISO prunus mume seeds or plants
Post by: Acoalwell on February 28, 2023, 01:41:08 PM
Hello everyone,

I would like to grow prunus mume (Japanese apricot) so that I can pickle my own umeboshi. I'm struggling to find seeds or plants for sale online. I'm located in West Virginia, USA, but am happy to have something shipped. Does anyone know of reliable sellers or someone who might have seeds?

Thanks!

Are you willing to deal with import restrictions?

I believe Shiro Kaga is a prunus mume.

Well, that won't do much good. I see they are out of stock. Maybe you could call and order one.

Thank you!

Willis Orchard doesn't have the best reviews, but I've emailed the other two companies to see when they'll have more trees in stock. Thanks!

I've never done that before so I'm not sure what it would entail. Potentially!

I have purchased mine from both sources.

You've purchased from Willis Orchards with success?

I was just doing some searches to find varieties since I'm just beginning to get into bonsai. I've read that many mume are more ornamental, and don't give good fruit. That said, I grafted a 'kanko bai' scion from fruitwood onto a plum rootstock. Fruitwood only stocks 'kanko bai' though. I've been searching online for other variety scionwood as well. Trees are expensive after all. But, not much luck.

Tagging onto this convo, I'm wondering if people have prunus mume scionwood. I'd love to add some varieties onto my kanko bai.

How big are the fruits of your kanko bai?  I am interested in grafting a prunus mume onto my peach tree perhaps to make some Japanese style preserved plum(umeboshi). Thanks
