Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Jakfruit tasting reviews

I love reading these jackfruit tasting reviews. Keep them coming.

Here in California, we get jackfruits imported from Mexico. It's highly likely they are fruit from seedlings, because they're wildly variable. You don't know what you're gonna get. I've had some extraordinary ones and some average ones. Some are crunchy, others are soft, etc. It's fun shopping for them, kinda like playing a jackfruit lottery.

@MasonG31,
Is that orange colored or the photo makes it look like one?

Fruitfool

It's a red variety.

I do have an orange variety as well that is very good.

A forum member was kind enough to send me some scions of an unnamed variety he grows in Florida.  He grows several seedlings, and this one is his favorite.  My grafts fruited for the first time this year, and this fruit was amazing!  Smooth, sweet, with a burst of flavor.  No funky aftertaste or off flavors.  A winner for sure.  The seeds will be planted, and I'm going to graft this one onto some of my other trees.  So far this year, my favorites are Vermilion, Zill Dark, and this excellent unnamed variety!

Peach Cobbler- making mostly leaves not flowers.  Will be my 1st tasting though so i'm looking forward to it :)

shot, cool.

I love watching the reaction of people who try the Peach Cobbler mango for the first time.  Hope you get fruit.

I would plant a seedling from a really good cherimoya.  If the fruit turns out to be no good, you'll have a nice, strong rootstock to graft onto.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Mexican Sunflower Cuttings!
« on: January 08, 2024, 12:03:17 PM »
I’m selling cuttings of the Mexican Sunflower (Tithonia Diversifolia).  This is the ultimate chop and drop plant.  Produces loads and loads of fresh mulch.  Also produces beautiful yellow flowers that attracts lots of pollinating insects.  Really easy plant to take care of.  Super drought tolerant and grows like a weed.  Just set it and forget it.  $4 each (minimum order of 5 cuttings).  Shipping is $9.  I can cut various sizes.  Standard size is 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch.  Just let me know.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: What is the best tasting avocado variety?

Ok we need AJ to say if he prefers nabal or sharwil.  Nabal is nicexcellent but sharwil still is better IMO.

Guess it just comes down to personal preference.

Nabal is my favorite.  Best avocado I’ve ever eaten.  Sharwil is in my top 3, along with Reed.  Those 3 picked at the right time are world class, and they can go toe to toe against each other.

dark fruit. Fruits are big, dark, and sweet (when it is really ripe) with high acidity.    Not much gasoline smell.

Red fruit. It was grafted last year.  Fruits are even bigger, red, and sweet.  Not much gasoline smell.

Is your red fruit a named variety? Where did you find it?  That’s a good looking fruit. Nice size.

Zill Dark harvested just this morning. Lots of resin, lots of sweetness, a little acidity to give it some balance. I just wished my tree would produce more. I only have about 7 more on the tree.  Seems to be a shy bearer at least for me.

What type of soil did you plant it in?

M4 could be called:

Mr. Coconut
Coconut Extreme
Coconut Dream

 ::) ;)

These are great names.  M4 deserves the late season crown.  It’s top tier in my opinion.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Surinam Cherry - Taste
« on: August 07, 2023, 05:58:21 PM »
A good Surinam Cherry variety (Zill Dark, Vermilion, etc.) has the same strong, resinous “bite” of a good Indian mango.  I recently had some Zill Dark that were super intensely flavored, in a good way.  Highly recommended!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Sweet Tart Mango Tree Producing in SoCal
« on: August 07, 2023, 07:55:22 AM »
Yea, the same thing happened to me in 2021 regarding the fruit split. Check out my previous post. You can do a search under my name and "show posts". Look back to 2021.

Remove all of your fruit and apply organic fertilizer and azomite now. Focus on vegetative growth for the next 2-3 years. Your Sweet Tart Mango tree is still too young and needs more maturity as mine did.

Good Luck

Johnny

Thanks for the tips Johnny.  I’ll try it, although the thought of removing all the fruit is quite painful, lol.  At the moment, the tree is flushing lots of vegetative growth as well.  Do you have any fertilizer recommendations in terms of brand or ratios?

My Sweet Tart mangoes are starting to crack.  I think I overwatered.  These are from a Sweet Tart mango seed I planted in 2018.
