Small seed lot permit and vermculite
« on: September 02, 2024, 10:46:43 PM »
Hello,

I was planning on buying some seeds from Raul (Olosapo) but he advised to see if I could receive them in vermiculite.  I'm having difficulty determining if this is allowed.  He said some branches are okay with it.  I could call some of the inspection stations to find out, but I know what people tell you over the phone is not always congruent with practice so I'm hoping one of the gurus on here could help me. Also, I live in Arkansas, so while I have my permit I am unsure of which label I should provide for which inspection station.  Would anyone be able to point me in the right direction or give me some advice?

Thanks!

I'd call your office that you would be receiving the seeds at. I called mine and they looked up the regs, asked their colleagues, and confirmed no vermiculite allowed. Could be different in your state/office.

You can use the ATL inspection station.
They are really nice and will take vermiculite.

I just imported some of Raul's Olosapo seeds.  Beforehand I called up the USDA office near me to confirm what was allowable.  They stated vermiculite was allowed so long as it didn't obfuscate the seeds totally.  They cleared inspection and I received today so it was fine.  Ymmv so just call them.

Good to know, thank you.  I went with Jaboticaba45's advice and used the ATL inspection station.
