I wish I had the experience to answer your question! I'm very early on in my Duguetia journey, one of 3 D. aff. confusa seedlings has survived and is now growing into a 2 gallon pot; 3 D. marcgraviana with fair –but no better– vigor in dibble tubes are ready for a pot up, and waiting on germination of:

D. echinophora 'XL'
D. cauliflora
D. stenantha
D. lanceolata
D. lepidota
D. marcgraviana 'Gigante de Rondōnia'

I'm addressing the tendency of Dugetia seeds to bloom with damping off fungus by sprinkling cinnamon powder on the surface of the media every 3rd watering.

I'll be delighted if only a few want to thrive here in Hawai'i!

Of my annonas my A. macroprophyllata grow the fastest and are the largest right now.

Dugeutias are pretty slow to start off, and are not as easy as annonas.
Annonas are more easy like sugar apple, rollinia, cherimoya etc.

Here in Southern California, cherimoyas grow phenomenally and some start bearing fruit and flowering at three years from seed if cared for well.

D. spixiana is growing slowly like 1 leaf every two months with the rare occasion of 2-3 in a month

D. echinophora is growing very slowly with about a growth of 1 leaf for every 2.5 months

I actually prefer the slower growth as it does give me time to pplan out on what I can do with them later on

I live with my parents and I keep all mine during the winter in the 2nd garage (don't judge, I was going to get a house with a savings after I relocated to where they retired, then the economy pulled the rug from under me) and I'd be in BIG trouble if everything grew fast.

Hi,

Here’s a shorter version in point form:

Duguetia (Slower-growing, but a few faster options)
Duguetia furfuracea (Araticum): Relatively faster, fruits in 5-7 years.
Duguetia lanceolata: Slightly faster fruiting, depends on climate and care.

Annona (Faster-growing)
Annona squamosa (Sugar Apple): Fruits in 3 years.
Annona cherimola (Cherimoya): Fruits in 3-5 years, prefers subtropical climates.
Annona reticulata (Custard Apple): Fruits in 3-4 years.
Annona muricata (Soursop): Fruits in 3-4 years, best in warm, tropical climates.

Tips for Faster Fruiting
Grafting: Speeds up fruiting, especially for Annona species.
Climate: Ensure tropical or subtropical conditions with plenty of sunlight.
Soil: Well-draining soil and regular watering.
Fertilization: Use balanced fertilizer to promote growth and fruiting.
Hope this helps!

And it really needs to be stressed to use a well-draining soil for annonas and duguetias especially.  Starting out, I was using too heavy a soil and it's quite clear that these plants really do not like that. They seem to have somewhat sensitive roots since they're not big fans of being repotted either.  I think mixing in a fair amount of coco coir or such is essential if you're keeping these in pots.  Actually this seems to be true of the majority of these tropical plants, but annonacae especially need it.

Just my two cents from someone growing in a colder climate. Sugar apples, cherimoyas, and atemoyas are definitely doable but you need to have your processes and setups dialed in. Ultimately you'd be wasting your time if you don't have a decent amount of space to provide them and a heated greenhouse, or possibly a really sunny southern facing bay window or sunroom. As for a lot of these newer annonas and duguetias, you have to look at them as almost a novelty. I think there's been only one person to fruit a duguetia in mainland US and that's in southern Florida. Thats the way I look at it, I don't have high expectations for fruit but if I can get the plant to thrive that's cool, if it flowers even better.

100% agree
Need to use right rootstock and rootmakers to prevent root rot🥲
Now duguetia definitively needs more trials and different sp. But in general it’ll take a while and very though and who cares anyways?
The one that fruited in the USA tasted like blue cheese ( of course not a fair sample since it was first fruit, but it gives you a general idea)

Hopefully some better ones we can fruit instead.

And just to emphasize the point regarding space consideration. This is how big my soursop had to get before it started flowering…

It's fast to grow and fruit for SoCal too. Depends on the strain, but 5 years from seed is not impossible. Once it gets about 2 ft tall in the ground it really bulks up.

I have a 4 year old seedling in the ground that looks like it's close to fruiting potentially next year.
Grow mainly fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

Have you fruited one in so cal yet? Can definitely be done in so cal but I still wouldn’t encourage it. Overwintering for 5 years to get fruit is a tricky gamble, and then they randomly die too. This thread is for Seattle so not super relevant anyhow.

the "climate" in my house is probably more similar to south florida than cali, but more inputs are always helpful

How do you keep it hot and humid like south florida inside your house in northern Washington state in December and January!? Sounds delightful yet moist.

the place in my house i would put it would not get lower than 65f and usually not below 60% humidity and is interestingly much more humid in the winter

My friend in Cerritos has fruited it already. After seeing the results I have added more rollinia genetics to my collection. I just planted a second one in the ground and in the spring plan to plant a 3rd.

I love rollinia flavor more so then the other annonas I have tried so far.

Rollinia genetics are really interesting in that there are no named varieties and they have the widest native dispersal range of all the Annona’s from Central to South America .
