Should I prune it?
« on: October 01, 2021, 09:26:57 PM »
I just got a beautiful lemon aid tree from Madison Citrus nursery. It is about 3 ft tall with no branches. I want it to form branches. Should I just let it grow and see what happens or should I remove the apical portion to encourage branching?

Citrus trees respond well to pruning. Also the fruit forms on new growth.
In the groves after harvest the farmers take the sides and tops off every tree
with their mower blades and the trees flush new growth for next years fruit

yeah lemons seem to be really vigorous and will put out long shoots if not pruned rather heavily.  I am growing mine in containers so I prune them often.  Only meyer "lemon" and sunquat/lemonquats seems to stay reasonably compact, the true lemons grow long shoots.
