Contorted Mulberry Tree
« on: May 18, 2023, 07:28:56 AM »
Since I have not seen many people post about their contorted mulberry tree, I thought I would take some photos of my grafted branch and show you what it looks like. This tree is pretty unusual in that the branch is all contorted, I read some people use the branches in flower arrangements.

The fruits of the contorted mublerry is very sweet, what a surprise it was. The last few years it only had a few fruits on each branch that were very small (1/4"-1/2" long) so it was difficult to taste it for flavor or compare it to other varieties like Shangri La.

This year my grafts have full size fruits, and lots of them. The size of the fruits are 1/2-3/4" long, taste is very good, sweeter tasting than the Shangri La, Jan's Best World's Best, Tahi Dwarf, Tice, Oscar, Silk Hope.

If you grow this variety, please post some photos or make your comments on the taste of the fruits.

I heard that the name given to this contorted variety by the lady who found the mutation on her tree is:

Callie’s Delight Contorted Mulberry

Dang, I have this one but I guess someone sold me a male branch which I grafted because it has flowers not fruit. :( I would like to add female on the top if you'll sell me scions Kaz!

Yummy!!!
I LOVE mulberries!
We had a contorted mulberry in the front yard, but the birds always got the berries, and we got so tired of having great splats of purple bird poop all over our car that we sadly cut it down.

I've been curious about this. No one that I'm in contact with is growing it out here, and getting intel on the fruit has been difficult.

Where did you purchase it?

Pretty sure it’s male. Think I grabbed this one off EBay like 5-6 yrs ago

Is the branches contorted, I can't really tell from the photo. My branches seems to be a little more obvious with twisted looking branches. You four main branches does not seem to be as crooked as my grafted branch. Mike (achetadomestica ) has the parent tree from where I got my scionwood and his tree looks very twisty.

Here’s a pic of the branches in the winter. I pruned a ton of the more contorted lower branches last year to let more light for a persimmon behind it

Ok, now I see it. So it does have the nice, contorted branches.

That is very similar to what I know as the contorted mulberry. I lost interest in ours because it never set fruit. I never knew that there was one that fruited. It appears less contorted as it ages because the contorted areas thicken.

Here's mine
The birds ate 99% of my mulberries this year. Last year the birds didn't
touch one and the year before they shared them with me. STRANGE !
The woodpeckers have even started eating my white shatoot this week.
Now they are eyeing my Pickering mangos

Did not know this was a real thing. Does it root from cuttings?

Anyone know if the contorted cuttings from here are fruiting or male?

https://fruitwoodnursery.com/fruit-tree-scion-and-cuttings-wood/mulberry-cutting-and-scion-wood-morus-alba-morus-nigra/contorted-mulberry-scion-or-cutting-wood-detail

I'll reach out to them to ask if no one is sure.

Ask them if it is the Callie's Delight from Just Fruits. They may be the only nursery that sell the one that has female flowers and fruits.

Thanks Robert, yes it does grow well here. The mulberry trees grow so fast, I'm cutting down most of my larger trees in ground. But I like the contorted mulberry tree so I will keep that one grafted to some smaller trees. The fruit on the contorted mulberry actually tastes sweeter than most of the other varieties. If you're interested in trading for some cuttings of your white sapote then send me a message.

I bought a contorted mulberry from One Green World recently and it had male catkins lol. Will this eventually make berries? Their website says it does but they are unresponsive to my emails on whether this one will or not.

Read my post above. I heard only the Callie's Delight is guaranteed to have fruits since it was a sport/mutation on a contorted mulberry that did not have fruits.

I have not heard of any other source for fruiting contorted mulberries. If it didn't come from Just Fruits, then it probably will not fruit for you.

fishie,

If you know how to graft, you can purchase scion wood from Mike (achetadomestica), he has the contorted mulberry (that fruits) for sale. I got my scion wood from him 3-4 yrs ago and now it is growing strong as shown in the photos above.

Yup I got some from Mike after I bought from OGW. They are rooting right now. Just wondering if I should ask for a refund now from OGW ;D

Interestingly my contorted mulberry from Mike produced male flowers this year. I suspect it'll revert to female next year. I'm donating my contorted mulberry to the local community garden though, it grew way too fast and I don't have room for it.
