My deepest condolences. I remember meeting Bob way back in the days of the original Citrus Growers Forum. He even traveled all the way here to Virginia Beach for one of the early South Eastern Citrus Expos. I'm really sad to hear the news. He helped so many junior growers and shared an enormous amount of knowledge.  He will certainly be missed.

Cold Hardy Citrus / Re: Low grafting vs. high grafting in citrus
« on: January 26, 2026, 04:28:55 PM »
I agree with Zitrusgaertner on both points. Early on, my low grafted trees or non-grafted seedlings experienced bark splitting on the scions from the colder air settling on the lower couple feet of the trunk. The majority of the trees damaged with bark splitting ended up dying. When I switched to high grafts (at least 2 ft to up to nearly 4 ft) onto regular poncirus trifoliate or flying dragon my trees were much less susceptible to the bark splitting and seem to go into a deeper winter dormancy. The trade off is not being able to soil bank or easily cover/protect them as they are taller trees. Some people prefer to keep their trees lower and smaller to be able to protect with temporary shelters during extreme cold events. I wanted to get my trees going and not have to worry about protecting every year.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Calamondin vs. Indio vs. Kucle

I thought you were asking about Kucle. Calamondin is probably the most prolific and everbearing though

For some reason my Indio always had sour fruits so I sold it. It did have beautiful fruit though. I have Kucle but I find it very similar to Fukushu but just a little smaller. Some say it is inferior to Fukushu but I feel like they are very close in flavor. Maybe it depends on how much heat the tree is getting while the fruit develops. I'm in zone 8 with hot summers so I get a good amount of heat here. For out of hand eating I'd prefer Kucle or Fukushu but for flavoring foods I'd use calamondin.
