Citrus General Discussion / C-35 Vs Flying dragon
« on: April 25, 2020, 12:05:06 AM »
Rootstock questions!!

I do know a little about FD, it cuts tree size of around 50% or more, encourages early fruiting with large yields, and tolerance to root rot as well as cold hardiness. Although slow growing, They are ideal for containers.

I am wondering how does the semi-dwarf C-35 compare in size, fruiting capacity (early fruiting? Yields?), would it make a suitable candidate for containers? Downfalls of using it? Etc.

I know very little about C-35 and would love to know more before I purchase a few trees on this rootstock!

Thanks

Has anyone ever heard of this? I recently stumbled across this a little bit ago. I did not know that there was a variegated variety of the flying dragon! Definitely on my plants most wanted list.

Citrus General Discussion / Rooting flying dragon cuttings

I wish to get a fruiting flying dragon for my own personal use of rootstock. Keep it in a container. Has anyone tried rooting cuttings from a fruiting FD? Or know where one could purchase a smaller, older FD?

Citrus General Discussion / Problem with Thrips! Indoors!
« on: April 03, 2020, 03:32:17 PM »
Hey guys,

I have around 10 12” pots in a smaller enclosed area, I’ve been battling thrips like non stop. I’ve used various insecticidal soaps, neem, and a few others and I can’t quite get rid of them. They’re getting into my flower buds and taking out a lot of the lower leaves.

Any help would be awesome or suggestions!

Thanks!

Citrus General Discussion / Leaf drop during production
« on: February 25, 2020, 10:19:44 PM »
So I’ve had my citrus for about a year now, no issues, other than when I burned my variegated pink lemon with too much foliage pro to water... anyways that was a while ago. I’ve learned so many great things from you guys on this forum! Thank you all! Anyways, After long last, I finally have my meyer producing. It has already flowered and has small lemons forming. It had a flush of new growth! Now again I am new to the actual production of citrus, so it’s cool to have a functioning tree and all, but the lemon seems to be dropping quite a few leaves. Maybe 3 a day since the lemons set. I have a 600w LED panel at 14 hours a day (1200umol/m/s^2) plus some other supplemental lights until my citrus can be outdoors again in the summer. I also supply bottom heat, temps are anywhere from 70F to 80F (21C to 28C) at all times.

I have a water meter set at the bottom of the root base when I planted it a month ago in the 5-1-1 mix I made, it hasn’t shown any negative symptoms until the fruit actually set. None of the fruit has fallen, only quite a few of the old leaves, along with a few portions of new growth has shriveled. I know Meyers are very picky, however I haven’t changed anything for it recently.. I water when the meter is on 2/8 (1 being bone dry and 8 being soaked) with 5ml of foliage pro to a gal (macro 9-3-6 + trace), and add a slow release of 19-6-12. I carefully measure now a days since I burned one plant that’s still in recovery as stated before.

My calamondin is doing just peachy, setting fruit and new flowers everywhere. Fruit of all stages. No issues there. My others are pushing out new growth like crazy, no issues.

Long story short, Basically, just wondering if some leaf drop on these Meyers is normal during production. Geez I treat these plants like my children!   ;D
Sorry for the long post! Thanks!

Citrus General Discussion / Best way to root calamondins?
« on: February 19, 2020, 10:28:13 AM »
I am able to successfully root lemons using my methods of bottom heat in a plastic water bottle with the cap off, medium light intensity, misting it every day. I use hormondin 3 (.8% aba) for woody plants. Lemons and pomegranates take perfectly fine, almost 100% of the time. However I can’t seem to get any other types of citrus to work out. I know calamondins are commonly rooted and thrive on their own roots, however, mine always seem to flush out without roots, or rot. I use a 70% perlite, 30% coconut coir. Not sure why the lemons work and the calamondin don’t. Any tips?? I currently am testing out a home made propagation bucket (90gph pump with a spray head that basically just keeps the tips on the bottom wet). Only one week in and nothing yet, but hopeful.

Citrus General Discussion / Record buck farms
« on: February 17, 2020, 09:16:31 PM »
Recently, I have finally found a vendor for citrus up in the north woods of Wisconsin! To my luck, it was a buy one get one. So you know how that went... my question is, are all of record buck farms citrus rooted? I can see how the Meyer and calamondin are, but can’t imagine grapefruit and kumquats being sold as rooted plants. There’s no graft junction to be seen. Can’t seem to find any info on them!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Wurtz Avocado info?
« on: February 01, 2020, 09:34:57 PM »
I’m slowly getting into avocado! I’m in zone 5A, so I’m container only. I am wondering how these are propagated? Are they mostly just planted from seeds and grafted (being they’re the only dwarf known I guess) or is the scion dwarfing rather than the rootstock? Where would I be able to get something like this?

Thanks!

Citrus General Discussion / Bucket Mist cloner, DIY
« on: January 15, 2020, 10:04:17 PM »
I’m building my own cheapo mist cloner. 5 gal bucket, some holes cut in the lid, foam to hold the cuttings, 90gph pump with a 360 sprayer toward the top to hit the cuttings. I don’t know what kind of rooting hormone I will use but probably some gel..

Has anyone used these to do citrus cuttings? I have a buddy who claims to do this a lot and have great success. He keeps light low and it on 24/7, water temps around 60F. I wanted to try my luck! He says he barely ever used hormone and his calamondin rooted 100% of the time after 2 weeks.

Citrus General Discussion / Sunquat and Palestinian Sweet Lime
« on: December 26, 2019, 10:52:18 PM »
I just purchased these two off of Harris citrus nursery. Said to come in next week. They both seemed very interesting and both show a growth habit for container plants. I’m wondering, because I can’t fine much online, if anyone has experience with either of these fruits? Time to fruit, are they everbearing or seasonal, taste, etc.?

Thank you!

Citrus General Discussion / Grafting successful or too early?
« on: December 14, 2019, 10:42:52 PM »
Hello!

This is my first (after multiple smaller scale practices) grafting. I did it as of Nov 22nd. My last image shows the technique I used. Also I used a Xei Shan scion, on a dwarf trifoliate (FD) 1 year old rootstock. How long before the parafilm needs to come off? Will the leaves shoot out like this before the graft is successful?

Thanks for any input! I’m amazed with this community’s help and I’ve learned so much because of it!

I recently purchased a variegated eureka lemon, it was a from a rooted cutting. I know I can root more easy as it is a lemon, however I am looking to give some more dwarfing rootstock capacity. I know any trifoliate are not compatible with eureka, are there any other dwarfing rootstock out there that works? Or should I use just another sour orange?

I have received many cuttings and seeds from an amazing member here. I am wondering if any of you have experience in the difficulty of rooting these cuttings and fruiting and such. I have meiwa kumquat, finger limes, and ponderosa lemon cuttings along with a ton of meiwa fruit. I was told many times that kumquats suck on their own roots, so is rooting them ideal? I am really looking forward to the meiwa as I just tried its fruit, I didn’t know it would taste so good! And the finger lime of course.

Otherwise I have two month old rootstock that may size up. Thoughts and opinions?

Temperate Fruit Buy, Sell, & Trade / Apple scions to trade/share
« on: November 23, 2019, 10:43:23 PM »

Will be harvesting dormant cuttings this friday. Parent trees above and below. I believe they are honey crisp? And some other type. I know they are excellent in pies, apple sauce, jelly, other apple related things, and eating all together. One tree ripens early fall and the other late fall, very productive!

Message me if you have anything to trade! This is zone 4B. I believe they're good for zones 3B-9A or so. Had them for YEARS in the yard.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Names of natural growing dwarf mango?
« on: November 23, 2019, 05:01:41 PM »
I like growing my own dwarf trees from seed and rootstock, it's all a part of the experience. I am stumped on what people use for dwarfing rootstock of mango? Reason: I am limited to containers and wish to get produce. Any help is appreciated on what people might use!

Citrus General Discussion / Kinzu Kumquat/Orange?
« on: November 17, 2019, 10:13:10 PM »
I was wondering if anyone knows/has any of this variety? My basic google search didn't give many results.

Edit: I found out that they're other name is the Hong Kong Kumquat.

Does anyone know where I could obtain a seed or two?

Citrus Buy, Sell, & Trade / ISO Meyer Lemon scions
« on: November 14, 2019, 10:10:17 PM »
In wisconsin, so no regulations on me! I am looking to actually root some cuttings. I currently have limes going but was told they're not all that easy. I want to have some success, and was told Meyers are the way to go. I was told they barely need rooting hormones to be grown! Does anyone have any scions they would be willing to part with? I will pay for them and shipping.

Citrus General Discussion / Rooting Hormone
« on: November 10, 2019, 10:52:56 PM »
I currently have some "take root" powder from garden safe, I have tried to root peach and pomegranate with this without luck, only left rotting. Although I did not give proper heat and light and other user error--

Opinions about this/other rooting hormones? I am looking to root more of my dwarf pomegranates soon, and more importantly wanting to root some of my friends lime cuttings he will give me. I now have germination mats and lots of light.

How do people usually do it? I was told cut off all but one or fractions of the top leaves, dip in hormone, stick in dirt with a germination mat, having adequate lighting.

Looking to expand my collection! I do not know of very many that work well in pots. I live in zone 5A so very cold winters. I have a rather tropical emulated setup. They must be able to withstand pots their entire life! I love fruit trees! Any info on any is appreciated!

Hello!

I am a northern container gardener. I live in zone 5A but have a suitable environment set up in my apartment. I have things from potted citrus to dwarf coffee. I am in search of other dwarf varieties that I can grow in containers up here. Let me know if anyone has anything! Prefer things that will eventually fruit given container conditions, or things I can use as a rootstock to graft and force fruit. I have several plants I can trade, or PayPal works great too.

Thank you!

Frank

I have heard before that citrus leaves are in fact somewhat toxic to house pets, especially cats as they are curious and like to eat anything that brushes in the wind. Does this hold true for flying dragon or other trifoliate? I have friends that want some FD but I dont want to give it to them, being their cats like to chew on their houseplants occasionally, seeing that it makes it through the spikes lol.
