Temperate Fruit Buy, Sell, & Trade / ISO Apple Scions
« on: February 28, 2022, 11:03:29 PM »
Looking for various varieties of apples! High chill is fine, live in zone 4A. I do have several things from tropical fruit (lots of citrus) to other unknown high productive apple scions, to rooted cuttings of citrus trees. Or willing to purchase outright.. I have an order of 20 rootstock coming in and hadn’t thought about scions until now! Lol. Interested in just about anything! Prefer varieties that are semi-full self fertile (Granny Smith, golden delicious, etc.)

They have a gamble rooted cutting - could be nagami or meiwa if you’re willing to take the chance.. Their cuttings are top notch though.

Citrus General Discussion / LLT lemon and LLT lime
« on: December 04, 2021, 08:07:18 PM »
I just wanted to give this man some recognition. I just had the pleasure of speaking with Mr. Nair about his breeding projects. Such an interesting take and he showed me several successful plants and a great conversation packed full of knowledge. He’s working on other varieties as well. For one that really loves what he does. He is definitely an inspiration of mine for my future work, both professionally and as a hobby.

Frank, if you are growing in containers I agree with you that FD might be too dwarfing.  However, when I planted trees on c-35 and other unknown rootstocks in the ground they became extremely vigorous, growing easily 3x as fast as they did in their containers.

I feel the rhizosphere has a large impact on this! It would make sense that they'd be a lot better in ground. Overall though, I think C-35 is one of the best for containers. FD is good for kumquats, as they are happy small and can hold lots of fruit at their small size.

Citrus Buy, Sell, & Trade / Aus. Blood Lime (aka Red Centre lime) Budwood
« on: November 30, 2021, 07:25:13 PM »
Trade preferred for some interesting varieties! Doesn't have to be citrus, but if not, ones that will root well.

Sale for $15 for 4 sticks, $3 shipping

Note this is pretty thin budwood, as its very dwarf and bushy type, but an interesting variety not commonly sold in the states. Red Centre lime is not Australian red finger lime. They're round and smaller fruits getting a dark Burgundy color. I typically root these as cuttings and they do very well. I have three of those rooted now. The parent tree has fruited multiple times in the past and is currently blossoming.

same variety as this: https://www.citrusmen.com.au/shop/citrus-gems-byron-sunrise-44ewy-fj59t-szmlz-lwfy3-s2mnn-mpbxn

Personally, I would prefer trees on other things than FD. I’ve found a semi-dwarf such as C-35 or Standard Trifoliate, or even US-942 are much better choices, even in containers. FD in containers tends to grow about 1.5ft and non stop fruit, rarely putting on any other foliage. So leaving the tree rather bare and to struggle a lot. Just my personal preference though. Trees on FD rootstock just grow so awfully slow!

Tried messaging him and didn't respond, wanted to know if his flying dragon was true to seed or zygotic

Most FD are true, or mostly true to seed. Mine were seed grown of 6 years and fruit stands true.

CCPP has these? I’m about to order if they do. I didn’t even check with them assuming it’s not in the states. I attempted to go through the order process, but it comes to about $50 USD after tracking (and permits I guess) to ship out 20 seeds. Who knows if they’re viable? I don’t think I could take a chance at that price.

I’ve been searching for years, haven’t found one yet.

This seems to be the only place I can find them, but from Australia so take it as you will. I haven’t purchased from here before so I cannot say anything about them.

I still have around 40 seeds left if anyone is interested! 100% germination rate with the methods I’ve used.

Awesome, thank you for your input! I originally planned to use it as a main component in bonsai substrate. So I will likely use it as that, as well as citrus container mixes.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / ISO coffee

ISO coffee beans to sprout! I know I can buy them off ebay, but prefer to buy directly from people here!

I just wanted to run this by a few more knowledgeable people than I.. I wanted to use the remainder of my cherry stone grit in my citrus containers but wanted to ensure there wouldn’t be drawbacks. It is made of granite stone, no larger than that of turface/smaller pea gravel. Since it’s an igneous rock, I know it has a high mineral content, but they tend not to leach unless in powdered form. Correct me if I’m wrong here?

Got an excess of seeds of the all “rare” Kinzu Kumquat. Mine fruited in 1.5 years from seed (in less than favorable conditions). Said to be able to fruit in as little as 8 months. Great for bonsai.

Large handful of fresh fruits (20+ seeds) for $5, $4 shipping to the US.

I’ve tested all these below:

Mars Hydro (1000w, and 2500w, 120w and 260w actual)
Sonofarm (1000w and 4000w, 100w and 440w actual)
Viparspectra (1000w, ? Actual)
Unitfarm (1000w, 60w actual)
Canagrow (300w bulb, 60w actual)
Sansi LED (70w actual)
Bloom Plus (1000w, 80w actual)
And various burple lights I would never touch again lol.

In my opinion, the best is sonofarm. Same quality as Mars Hydro, only cheaper. Plus a 5 year warranty? Can’t beat it! Made with quality Samsung LM301B’s, plus genuine controllers.. It has fewer chips than the Mars, but run more power through each. A little lower power consumption overall, but very equivalent to Mars and runs around $100 less.

So sonofarm and Mars tie for output, but sonofarm sells them cheaper with a longer warranty. Viparspectra would be a good second place after the two tie, and bloom plus is not far behind (especially for the price). The brightness is definitely noticeable when comparing bloom plus to sonofarm, but quite similar to viparspectra. So due to the price point, I’d rather buy 2 bloom plus for the same price of 1 viparspectra lol.

Unit farm would come in next, but it has more of a harsh white light to it than a warm full spectrum. Still grows my trees well! I use it for newly grafted trees as it’s not so intense.

Sansi is my number 4, but when spending the money, I’d rather buy panels. Sansi sells their 70w for $70, and bloom plus panel is around $45. Bloom plus has much better coverage. Canagrow makes a really nice high powered bulb if you’re just looking for something small. $25 can’t beat that.

So anyway, sonofarm is my top (plus they’re all dimmable) I plan to buy more panels to replace the others as my trees grow and I feel like investing. In the pic below, left two panels are both sonofarm, on the right far back is my 2500w Mars, and the other two are both bloom plus. I’m using the viparspectra and other Mars over my rooted cuttings. All in all, my actual draw is around 1000w TOTAL using everything I have plus two root mats and 3 ventilation fans. If you look closely, you can see the difference in brightness of the chips. Sonofarm I feel takes the crown over all. I will note that the Mars has been used last winter so brightness does deteriorate overtime.

I personally use sonofarm panels. Newer company, but great quality stuff. Otherwise for cheap lights I use bloom plus lights. Most of the cheaper ones all work the same with similar output. I’ve been testing lights for a few years now so if anyone’s interested I can do an actual breakdown of the on brand expensive stuff vs cheap knock offs.

Pic was a little cut off.

That’s pretty resourceful! I grow my cuttings now in a rather controlled environment. Fan kicks on above 80F, heat mat kicks on under 80F. Has 100% success on everything I’ve tried so far, so trying my new methods with the harder to root stuff. I’ve got 90% success out of finger limes so far.. waiting to see for oranges and kumquats. And the Kinzu now!

74
I tried to root them before from cuttings, but had little luck. You got yours from nuncar?

I just plugged around 30 to root this time around to see how it goes now that I have upgraded my equipment.

75
Now I am patiently waiting for mine to turn orange. How long did it take you? Mine set in August

I want to say mine took from mid July when it first pushed flowers till now to ripen. Not crazy long. 3-6 months I would say as some was mature before they turn orange as well.
