Cold Hardy Citrus / Re: Citrus damage after freeze

You could always use the 4 X 8 silver sided sheets of polyurethane on three of the sides of your enclosures instead of plastic sheets..  These are sold at Home Depot.

Your Cara Cara should have had a variety/rootstock tag on it when you purchased it.

Sour orange was the go to rootstock until Tristazia various struck.  If you live in an area without the disease Sour Orange is an outstanding rootstock.  I have an inground Sour Orange tree, so I am able to get all the seed I can ever use.

Trees perform important respiratory functions at night and should have at least 6 hours of darkness per day, and more mature plants at least 8-10 hours a day.  Respiration is an import and vital function for all trees.

Eventually you will need to build a screened structure over the tree to protect it when it becomes larger.  Psyllids can infect the tree at any stage of growth, especially venerable during flushes of new growth.

I take  2 or 3 or sheets of the dally newspaper and wet it.  Place the seed between the  moist paper then slip  it into a plastic baggy.   In approx. a week the seed began to sprout.    Then I plant them in a clean pot with new medium.

Doesn't look like sun damage to me.  Looks more like insect damage.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Does this tree have citrus greening?
« on: December 29, 2022, 02:02:49 PM »
Manganese deficiency symptoms frequently show up on new growth, then generally fade away as the leaf matures.  This is due to the rapid growth of new leaves, and the sparse amount of manganese in the soil. Therefore it takes time for the manganese deficiency level to fill up.  In citrus a manganese leaf deficiency is shown as a yellowish leaf with green veins WITH green borders on the sides of the veins.

60
The pink coloration in Cara Cara is due to the antioxidant lycopene.  lycopene coloration is not affected by temperature.

Besides the leaf miner damage, the tree looks to have a nutrition deficiency.  Iron and or Manganese.

sc4001992,  no red colored fruit is of course due to your warm location.  Let me ask you a question.  Looking at your photos and the amazing fruit set do you follow UCR's Low Biuret Urea  spray program?

Citrus General Discussion / Re: At my wits end with these two citrus trees
« on: December 27, 2022, 03:46:07 PM »
First, the tree started out wrong.  When planting a citrus tree one should only  dig a hole large enough for the tree fit into.  Then back fill should be only the dirt that was removed when the hole was dug.  I agree with 1rainman that the tree has HLB.  You need to consult your county agricultural department right away.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: How to remove pulp from seed
« on: December 21, 2022, 12:30:40 PM »
:Large commercial nurseries crush the fruit under water string the resulting mixture with pectinase and warm  temperatures to separate the seed from the pulp  and washing out the seed.  The washed seed is surface sterilized with 125F water for 10 minutes, dipped in 1% Hydroxyquinoline sulfate, air dried on screens in the shade, and packaged in plastic bags, When storing, it is important to leave these storage bags open initially until the seed equilibrate with the refrigeration temperature, Fresh seed can be stored at 40-F for as long as 6 months.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Do Satsumas get better with age?
« on: December 05, 2022, 12:45:01 PM »
edweather, when you say our tree is a few years of age.  I take that to mean the tree is 2 years old.  Most citrus varieties do not produce quality fruit until at least 5 years old at the earliest  As the saying goes...... Good things come to those who wait..

Looking at the tree's leaves, the tree looks to be under nourished.  Have you been fertilizing the tree?

Would be easy enough to find out by planting numerous seeds, and see if you only get one seedling, or multiple seedlings peer seed.

In the above post, Tru suggested that variegated plants require more sun, due to the smaller portion of green pigmentation (chlorophyll) portion of the leaf produces less energy that a leaf that is entirely green.

I do not know about NZL exactly whether it is mono or polyembryonic  but I can say this> Almost all lemons and pure mandarins are true to type from seed.  NZL is a  cross between a lemon and a mandarin.

The Chandler tree I once had produced pink fruit.  During the winter months my heater is set to turn on when the greenhouse temperature falls to 40 degrees F.
