Leaf cuttings citrus propagation
Zagara:
Hello everyone,
I saw on ytb vidéo a person Who is able to make cuttings directly from leaf. I wondered if it was a fake or not, so I tried.
In december 2022, I put citrus leaf in sand. Some carefully picked from living trees ( lime, satsuma), others gathered from fruits from the shops(navel).
Navel and lime rooted well. Satsuma no.
Here are the pictures.
As you can see, one year later, there are roots but no shoots.
There is also a kind of stump at the base of the leaf. I hope that when the actual leaf will be too old and not efficient anymore for photosynthétise, the leaf will make a knew shoot from somewhere ?
Any thoughts on the mater?
Someone already got a new plant from a leaf cutting?

My "plan" is to have them make shoots, so I could collect grafting scions and then graft them onto a rootstock.
Cheers
Daintree:
I think those are called "blind cuttings".
Lots of leaves will make roots, but you have to have a meristem bud (which I believe usually form on the stem, NOT the petiole) in order to make a shoot that may turn into a plant. African violets and some other plants have dormant meristem cells in the actual petiole, but citrus leaves that grow roots will just be leaves with roots. :(

I had this happen unintentionally. I was repotting a couple trees I ordered and found a single small rooted leaf in the soil of one of the pots. I stuck it in a cup because I didn't know if it was from a graft or a rootstock. It did eventually make an initial shoot but unfortunately died back to the leaf from pest damage. I kept it, hoping it would send another shoot, which it eventually did and it was actually trifoliate rootstock and is now about 6 inches tall (which has taken about 1 year).
I wouldn't recommend this as a easy way to propagate because it grows so slowly, and you'd be much better off trying to root mature cuttings. But it was interesting to see that it could be done. I'll post photos later when I can find them
