Better tasting mango variety than Alphonso
« on: May 27, 2023, 06:35:31 AM »
Those people who tasted Alphonso mango grown in Konkan region of India, have you come across any mango variety which tastes better than Alphonso?
I only like Uttar pradesh grown Dasheri tastewise. It was at same level tastewise.
Keshar, mallika, benganpalli, imam pasand, Ratna, Sindhu which I tasted were not even close to Alphanso.

There are tons of mango varieties better than Alphonso here in the US. You don't have access to them in India unfortunately.

Taste perception and preferences are different for each individual but you may like ValCarrie, Carrie, Angie, Super Alphonso, J12. These have a different flavor profile from Indian grown Alphonso but they have some characteristics of the Indian resinous flavor of Alphonso. The ValCarrie is productive in my area and is disease resistant and has a richness passed onto it from the Valencia Pride and Carrie. J12 has a very different taste but my Indian friends really enjoyed this mango although it can have some s un even ripening issues when grown in my area. I love Alphonso with its metallic pine sol resinous gasoline flavor but these other varieties are as good or better without the Jellyseed or internal breakdown issues associated with Alphonso. Alphonso is also prone to Powdery Mildew at my location.

Last year Mr Satya told me, Valcarrie and Super Julie have excellent taste.
Any other mangoes? Taste should not be restricted to typical alphonso flavour.

Sonpari grown here in Miami was as good as Alphonso i ate in Nepal and i bet it will taste better grown in India. I liked the White Pirie and Taymour (the one from Tropical Acres), they were both outstanding with similar taste profile.

Hi Satya sir,
This year I have planted Sonpari.
Also planted Dasheri. Flowering of dasheri is doubltful in our hot climate. Still I am taking risk, due to its taste.

Last year I visited Vengurle Regional fruit research center, near Goa. They have many mango varieties from different countries. They also devloped new mango hybrids like Ratna, sindhu, etc. I asked staff which varieties taste better than Alphonso. They said none of variety is better than Alphanso, but Goa Mankur mango and Maya from Israel have very good taste. I purchased Goa mankur and Maya graft from them and planted near my house.

Please report back on the taste of Mankur, I'm very interested if you can do a comparison.

Also since you may have issues fruiting Dusheri, you may consider the related Mallika, which reportedly has a similar flavor, additionally from Burma you may try the Po Pyu Kalay, a similarly flavored mango that comes true from seed. (mostly)

I have yet not tasted Goa Mankur mango. I will write its taste comparison when I will taste one.
It fetches better price than Alphonso in Goa State. Goan people talk with pride about their Mancurad mangoes. So its must be very good. It has poor shelf life, hence it is not sold outside Goa state.
I did not like Mallika taste. May be it was not at its prime stage. Mallika has creamy buttery taste while dussheri has mild citrus flavour. Hence I will hope dasheri will fruit. Also I have planted amrapali tree, other hybrid of dasheri.
Lemon Meringue is not available here. Hope in future I will try it.

Thanks for this info about Mancurad. I bought a box of Mancurad from Mangozz this year and all of them had internal breakdown issues.

The best Malikas I've had tasted citrusy and complex. Very good, but inconsistently so.

Agreed, it's hard to pick. But really good when it's picked right.

Internal breakdown or spongy tissues are difficult to detect.. Alphonso , mancurad, mallika fruits may get affected by this defect.

In my opinion Israeli Maya grown commercially is very average classic flavor mango, don't set your expectations too high.

Yes I am not expecting much from Maya . But two different people named it at two different ocassions.
There is old research paper about exotic varieties (planted in India) compared with kesar. Only maya scored better in Organoleptic score than kesar.
http://iskv.in/wp-content/themes/iskv/volume-pdfs/bfd2f21c0805ca9084dd7bf3526af62bjkv-5-1-020.pdf

Hence I planted it.
