The previous box introduced me to Nabal and I was hooked. Now, let's see if Sharwil would have the same effect. Thanks again, Brad!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Problem grafting PPC atemoyas
« on: April 27, 2023, 10:41:38 PM »
This is not a question of rootstock. When an Annona graft pushes in less than a week, it means the graft has failed. And the failure is due to one or more of below:
  • Cambium not matching
  • The cut on scion and/or rootstock is not straight and flat
  • Scion is not "sufficiently" fresh
  • Bad timing
  • ...
The usual culprit is the cambium not matching for whatever reason.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: WTB BLUE JAVA BANANA PLANTS
« on: April 01, 2023, 08:57:39 PM »
FWIW, blue java is not very high on my list of bananas I've tried.

The ones I've had were really pasty mouth feel and more of a chore to eat than anything.

Seems more of a novelty fruit imo.

If you want tasty I'd look elsewhere, personally.

This banana is also AKA Ice Cream Banana. Meaning, if you eat it ice cold, it's like ice cream. But if you eat it room temperature, Potato Man is correct, you either hate it or like it. Not sure about love it. :)
Also, get ready to prop it when fruits appear.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Identity of mango in Singapore?
« on: March 28, 2023, 06:58:58 PM »
I don't think seeds are necessarily a big deal taking back to CA, they sell them in certain airports even.  They are looking more for pests, fruit, or blacklisted/invasive species I think.

For mango, the USDA's concern is actually the seeds and not the plant because it could harbor a certain borer type of insect. I forgot what that was, it was a long time ago when I applied for a permit to import tropical plants.

The grafted Garnet CORG arrived in perfect condition and blooming today. Thanks, Kevin.

Iffy, There are 2 kinds of papaya tastes, one with the puke aftertaste and one without. You might need to find out which one your friend's mother likes. Most of them have the puke aftertaste. The Hawaiian sunset/sunrise don't and those are the ones I could eat. :)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Mango: SoCal mango start flowering

My problem, at my location, is powdery mildew. No fruit or 2-3 from a lucky variety for the last 2 years. I'm trying to change this with sulfur spray.

My franken Manila has started to bloom also for 3 weeks now and I've been spraying sulfur once a week since then. I'm determined to get some fruits this coming season. Powdery mildew has been wrecking havoc for the last 2 years.
The tree is 16 years old but no that tall.

Oh, sorry
He should have passed like this, and the dormant period should be able to germinate.
yangmei and Pawpaw need to store seeds, there is a dormant period

The process is called seed stratification and it's part the Yangmei seeds germination process..

I don't know what is Yellow Birula, so I wouldn't be able to compare. Birula is the Socal version of Lisa (Sport of). It has more acidity than Lisa and it's my favorite of all the atemoyas. That's just my personal taste. A good Birula/Lisa that is well fertilized is top notch.

Calostro is also from Frank but I'm not sure if it's a sport or seedling of AP. Giant Atis is far behind Birula taste wise  and Calostro also beats it by a head (if you know horse racing!). This is one of the reason I didn't keep Giant Atis.

Another reason was that I already have PPC and it also beats Giat Atis taste wise by a bit more than a head. These two are quite similar except for the yellowish and large skin segments of the Giant Atis which sometime could get it mixed up with Mr. Minh atemoya.

Thanks for the opinion and photos. Did you ever try fruit that was grown here in SoCal?

Bill

I tried my own fruit before I decided to replace it. The person who gave it to me and who let me sampled the fruit in the photos lives here in Walnut.

15
I had a Giant Atis once and I'd say it's between AP and PPC taste/growth wise. Nothing special, it has more of the Sugar Apple taste than an Atemoya. It all depends on your fertilization regimen once you have fruit sets, more bloom type required than AP or cherimoyas. Here are photos from the person who gave me the scions and let me sample the fruit in the pix:

I got rid of all of mines because of RKN. The quarantining is too much of a hassle. Looks like no one here cares about RKN, too bad!
Good luck anyway.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: What variety/species of anonna is this?

Many Cubans call A. Reticulata "Cherimoya"

I think more like "Chirimoya", not "Che".

Congrats!!! However, I believe you picked them way too early. You need to wait until the skin carpels open up a bit more to show the yellowish or pinkish in between. That's when you get the maximum flesh-to-seed ratio because unlike the general belief, it's the flesh-to-seed ratio that is important. Not the number of seeds per fruit. My 2-cents.

Hey Bob, looks like Ilama trees do well under island climate. Have you tried to cross them with Sugar Apple?

unless they are coming from below the graft union (if it's a grafted one like the ones I see from box stores).

That would not be a root sucker which is a sucker that rises from a root above or near the surface. Guava is known to do this a lot.

I've noticed that my guava puts out a ton of root suckers.  Would it be viable to cut one off as a clone?

It's a bit off-topic but I believe root suckers are considered to be clones of the tree.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Java Plum Size?
« on: July 06, 2022, 09:49:35 PM »
In So Cal, I think it depends more on care and variety. I have a neglected unknown variety in a 20 g square pot and the fruits could get up to 1 1/2 inch long, 3/4 inc thick. Meaning with proper care, the fruits could get really big. And the tree fruits every year in that condition. My Mea Culpa.

There should NOT be any conflicting info on pollens. It's the freshness that matters, pollens are pollens.

The nabal tree grow like beasts too, i planted a bunch of them and they grow faster than any other type and just look super strong and healthy.  Seems like a stellar variety.  Im guessing the problem is long term the trees get too big but thats just a guess.  Maybe thats why reed is more popular, they seem to be a little smaller more manageable tree.

I was told that Nabal is an alternate bearer as the tree ages. But, how do you distinguish a Nabal fruit from a Reed?
