Tropical Fruit Discussion / What are you doing for/with your mango trees
« on: October 06, 2023, 01:11:15 PM »
It’s October, and I was wondering if you are doing anything for your mango trees.
My last pruning was 2 weeks ago, for a non-producing Florigon. I’ve been doing monthly fertilizer regimen per Zill’s mango note. I also water my mango trees weekly, twice a week for some, since they are all younger than 2 years old (in ground). I have not sprayed anything, and I am waiting for temperature to drop a bit more before spraying copper to prevent anthracnose.

What have you been doing for your mango trees? I am hoping to create a maintenance schedule for my mango trees so I won’t have to ask myself WTH am I supposed to do

Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Grafting mangoes - am I toast?
« on: August 11, 2023, 10:20:30 AM »
One Wednesday, I grafted- first real attempt, 5 scions that I ordered from TAF.  It was brutally hot when I grafted the scions at 5PM.

This morning, I saw condensation at the top of 4/5 grafts. I found one article in this forum that indicated that condensation is bad for grafting.

Should I remove the condensation and re-wrap my grafts? Or am I toast?

Thanks.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Question: Silas Woods Sapodilla
« on: July 04, 2023, 06:42:56 PM »
I have an interesting issue: my almost 2 y-o Silas Woods sapodilla tree (bought 25 gallon) has not stopped fruiting. About a month ago, i had to get rid of about 100 small to medium fruits from the tree because we thought the tree was getting stressed out from all the fruits - it did not look particularly happy to me with the leaves looking dull and sparse. The tree has grown a bit but it does not look much bigger than when we bought it - it receives regular fertilizer and water.
After we removed the fruits, the tree started to put out new leaves, and tiny fruits flowers - A LOT of them. I am leaning towards thinning out the fruits, or completely removing them again.
Has anyone experienced a similar situation? How did you address that issue?
Thanks.

Happy 4th of July!

I went to Fruitscapes this morning and picked up 7 mango varieties, most if not all are new to me, to celebrate Independence Day. Fireworks and mangoes are on dinner menu.

From left to right, top to bottom: Tara Lay, Fairchild, Sia Siam, Young, Kathy, Sweet Tart, Ice cream.

I hope everyone has had a good Fathers Day. To celebrate Fathers day 2023, my wife made this 'mango ai frutti di mare' for me using green vietnamese mango (Xoai Tuong) from the Clearwater farmers market.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Kidney Mango?
« on: June 11, 2023, 06:10:00 PM »
I bought these mangoes that were labeled "Kidney" by the owner. I kept asking the owner if the name was really kidney mango and he said yes. I have a feeling it may be a case of mis-identity as searches for "kidney mango" did not really turn up much for me.
The mango has a typical Thai appearance; the flesh is firm, fiber-less. The taste is very sweet with no hint of acidic at all. There's a very pleasant floral flavor hanging in the nostril, especially near the skin. (Sorry for my newbie mango tasting description. lol).
Has anyone come across anything like this?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / 2023 - mango experience
« on: May 08, 2023, 04:37:52 PM »
So far, I am 0 for 2 in terms of mango experience.
I bought a couple of highly-promoted Cac Hoa Loc mangoes a few weeks ago, and it was meh for its price.
Last weekend, I bought some Mallika mangos from a nursery on Pine Island. I tried them today, and it was another meh experience. The mangoes ($2 apiece) were fibrous, not much better than a Tommy Atkins. The sweetness was there but it tasted a bit watery to me.

What's your mango experience so far in the 2023 season?

My tropical guava tree has three fruits, and when they were about couple of inches, I bagged them up in organza bags. The fruits seem to have stopped getting bigger, and I decided to remove the bag from one fruit to see if it would make any difference.
About a week later, I noticed the one fruit that is not bagged is getting bigger and is showing a vibrant color. The 2 fruits that were in bag look about the same size and dark green color as before.
Is this a fluke or did my bagging of the guavas did more bad than good to them?
Thanks for any insight.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Bordeaux mix as Fungicide
« on: March 14, 2023, 09:53:26 PM »
I have not found much about Bordeaux mix in this forum and was wondering if it is not effective as a fungicide? The internet claims that Bordeaux mix is a good organic fungicide that has been used since the 19th century.
Has anyone used Bordeaux mix as a fungicide for their trees?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Copper Fungicide - too much?
« on: January 30, 2023, 10:19:48 AM »
I mixed 4 ounces of Bonide copper fungicide with 1 gallon of water to spray my mango trees. My homedepot sprayer kept getting clogged, so i disconnected the wand and sprayed.
This is what I saw after things dried up. I wondered if i sprayed too much copper and that would cause leaf burn. What do you think? Thanks.

Edit: There's some existing leaf burn, and if i recall correctly, it's been there since I bought it.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Question: Young Carrie mango tree blooming
« on: January 09, 2023, 07:16:29 PM »
Picture below is my Carrie mango tree. I bought it @ 7 Gallon in April of last year. It stands @ around > 5 feet tall, and every terminal of the tree is blooming.
I am leaning towards removing the panicles/fruits and waiting until next year. I am curious what others have done with their mango trees in a similar situation. Did you let it fruit and how did it turn out? etc. Did you decide when to let the mango tree fruit based on the time in ground or height, trunk's diameter?
Thanks.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Is there hope to save my mango tree?
« on: October 12, 2022, 10:53:19 AM »
My mango tree was knocked down hard by hurricane Ian. When I tried to straighten the tree, I decided in a split second that I would also correct an earlier mistake of planting it too low. So, I dug up the roots and replanted the tree. Now my mango tree looks like it is dying, and I had to cut it back quite a bit while watering it every couple of days.
Is there a way to increase my chances of saving this mango tree? My wife absolutely loves its fruits.
Thanks.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Too late to plant a mango tree?
« on: September 21, 2022, 09:27:19 PM »
Last weekend, I bought a 3-gallon Orange Sherbet tree. I was wondering if it is too late in the year to plant it, as I lost 4 3-gallon mango trees from the freeze earlier this year; they were planted around September/October last year.
I am in zone 10a, and last year we had a couple of days where temperature dropped to 29F. Only my 25-gallon mango tree survived but suffered quite a bit.
TIA

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Soil Test - HoldAll
« on: September 05, 2022, 12:35:08 PM »
I bought this soil test kit from Lowes and used the soil around my mango tree for the test. I am not sure if my soil lacks a lot of nutrients  (i use 8-4-8 fertilizer 3x/year and supplement compost + chicken manure in the last month) or the test kit is pretty inaccurate The color of N is a bit off, even for Very Low level.
Has anyone tried this test kit?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Question: mango tree grafting strategy.
« on: August 30, 2022, 08:43:59 PM »
I am looking into grafting mango trees to increase the number of varieties in my small urban backyard. I’ve watched a lot of videos and read articles about grafting. Even though there are a lot of videos and articles about grafting techniques, I have not seen much that talks about grafting strategy besides maybe the timing/season for grafting.

Do you have a strategy when you graft your mango trees? For example, do you graft cultivars that have same seed type (monoembryonic seed scion to monoembryonic seed tree, poly to poly), or do you graft cultivars that fruit at the same time (early season scion to early season tree, etc), disease resistance, flavor, etc. Is there science or practical results for your strategy?

For example, I want to limit the height of my fruit trees. So my thinking is that if I graft a low vigor variety scion onto a high vigor tree, or vice versa, the different vigor rates will balance each other out. I also want to have varieties that fruit at around the same time so they have enough time to ‘recover’ after harvest, etc.
Sorry if the question sounds silly.

Good Monday morning,

I am trying to grow an Orange Sherbet from seed. It looks like I'll have 2 seedlings. One of them germinated very quickly (less than a week), and the other one just started to show up yesterday - it may be hard to see but it is below the bigger seedling and to the right of picture.
How do I know which one is a clone from the mother tree? Would the germination rate indicate whether it is a a clone or not?
Thanks.
P.S: I could have purchased a tree, but i don't have anymore real estate in my backyard and decided to try to grow this from seedling so maybe I can graft it to another tree down the road.

Has anyone tried this recipe from Harvard for fruit trees? If yes, how did it help or hurt your trees? https://green.harvard.edu/tools-resources/how/make-your-own-compost-tea
