Tropical Fruit Discussion / Top dressing soil in humid zone
« on: November 16, 2025, 02:43:42 PM »
Hi, I’m in Central FL and have a problem doing the top dressing fertilization method, as the organic matter seems to always gather mold, which proves detrimental to sensitive plants.  Does anyone else deal with this and what is the fix?  Many thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Cold protection - C9 lights and frost cloth
« on: November 10, 2025, 10:49:25 AM »
Hi all,

In preparations for tonight’s uncharacteristic cold snap does anyone know if C9 lights placed on top of frost covers will burn the fabric?  I am wondering because it will be easier to cover a large bunch of small trees and seedlings this way rather than weaving the lights all around every single tree…

Citrus General Discussion / Ponderosa lemon question
« on: November 07, 2025, 07:14:17 AM »
My ponderosa lemon bush has lemons this year that are huge and finally turning yellow?  I know that there isn't much juice in these fruits, but is there a way to tell when they are ready to be picked?  In general I have a hard time knowing when to pick citrus, as I think my other citrus trees probably have HLB and never achieved their correct color (stayed green) :(

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Grafting. Stoopid question ;)
« on: October 30, 2025, 12:12:05 PM »
Just to confirm, if you want to get fruit quicker, it’s the SCION being grafted onto the rootstock that has to be from a mature, fruiting-age tree, correct?  That it is not the age of the rootstock that matters for faster fruiting time, right?

Oh wait…

If you graft a young branch of a new cultivar onto an established tree, then fruit will come quickly as if it were an extension of the same trees. OK now I’m confused.  :o

OH I JUST REALIZED

If the rootstock is a rooted cutting of a mature tree then the scion will fruit faster. However, young rootstock will not yield fruit quickly even if the scion is mature…

RIGHT???

Tropical Fruit Discussion / The right type of sand
« on: October 25, 2025, 11:53:32 AM »
What sand do you use for growing seedlings?
What sand do you use for adding to soil for drainage?

Is this a bad sand to use?  I really like the bulk and all-purpose factor:  https://www.homedepot.com/p/Quikrete-50-lb-All-Purpose-Sand-115251/100318450

Sigh, I’m just looking to make life a LITTLE bit easier LOL

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Question on rootstocks
« on: October 12, 2025, 07:44:42 PM »
Hi,

I've never grafted before but expect it will happen someday LOL

My question is, are rootstocks always grown from seed or are they rooted from cuttings?  Many rootstocks shown seem to have a thick girth and imagine those would have taken years to grow, but I could be wrong!  Still have so many questions but for now this will solve a big one 😀

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Passiflora for sleep
« on: October 12, 2025, 06:33:08 PM »
Hi everyone,

I can't seem to find the information on which specific passiflora cultivar(s) leaves are used for sleep aids.  Are all of them food or only some of them?  Would really like to know, thanks in advance!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Tropical raspberries
« on: October 03, 2025, 02:19:42 PM »
I've tried germinating several different cultivars of tropical raspberries with no luck.  Has anyone had success?  Do they take a helluva lot of time to germinate?  TIA!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Salacca questions
« on: September 26, 2025, 07:25:42 AM »
Would the spikes on the Salacca trees, in hedge form, deter an alligator?  How effective are the spikes from deterring raccoons and other animals from accessing the ripened fruit?

If anyone has any growing tips for these (some of mine are starting to brown and die in decent heat and humidity) it would be greatly appreciated!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / PictureThis - funny
« on: August 31, 2025, 10:42:50 AM »
I used the PictureThis app to help remind me what seedling I grew, and the Inga vera was somehow identified as Marijuana by the app.  It misnamed it twice after which I finally remembered what it was.   ;D

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Need trellis ideas, please help!
« on: June 20, 2025, 06:04:46 AM »
I’m trying to strategize how to set up trellises for various passion fruits which require full sun but won’t get ripped up and blown into a neighbor’s house during the awful hurricane season.  What do others do/use that is sturdy and can withstand these bothersome weather conditions?  All ideas appreciated, thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Inga cinnamomea in FL
« on: May 23, 2025, 05:24:18 PM »
Does anyone have any success/experience in growing this Inga species in Central FL or elsewhere?  I have some seedlings but want to know if our climate will provide the means for it to produce pods.  I hear this cultivar makes some yummy ones :)

Also, I am a pretty aggressive pruner to keep trees small.  I have some other Ingas that are in pots and doing well (so far) despite a few setbacks.  What are the specific requirements for Ingas to produce those delicious pods?  Must they be a certain size/height/age/location?  Will pruning preclude them from reaching the pod making stage?

Thanks!

Hi everyone,

Has anyone ever grown the above fruit tree?  I am growing it and have some seedlings but have read mixed information on the taste of the fruits.  Does anyone have any information on that?  Thanks!
