Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: Guabiju Seed & Scion Sale
« on: January 25, 2025, 07:06:53 PM »
My guaybiju is 7 years old, 6 feet tall, and has flowered for two years in a row, but hasn't set a fruit. Does in need a pollination partner or grafting a branch onto it?

I've been growing Pouteria salicifolia for about a year, mostly outdoors.  Seems to tolerate being out in some occasionally frosty weather and a couple of months of temperatures mostly in the 30-50 F range.  I made a short video, in case anyone is interested.  https://www.youtube.com/shorts/9Ay3uIN9ifs

I've been a long time friend of Matt, actually from before he officially started his nursery.  We're both in the Seattle area.  He has many very interesting plants and some of my largest and nicest plants in my collection originally came from him as small seedlings from years ago.  A very knowledgeable plant scholar that I've learned a lot from.

Has anyone grafted lucuma on canistel rootstock successfully?  (Does it work?)

I could use a mature olosapo cutting to graft onto my seedlings as well.

Looks amazing!  Would be cool to see the Escalarte fruits if you happen to have a picture, too.

At fruit and spice park in Homestead, FL, there are some massive jamun trees draping over the parking lot and dropping of thousands of berries. I recall the flavor was pretty good, sweet and tart, similar to an almost ripe blackberry.  I'm growing a few seedlings from that 2021 trip and they're very fast growers.

I'll chime in again.  Just a couple of things I do, I try to repot almost all my plants about once a year.  Basically pull them out of the pot, and if the roots aren't completely filled in yet, I tap the root ball and remove some excess mix, typically about a third to half, mostly on the bottom where it's more sludgy and mucky.   I then will repot the plant with fresh peat and a generous amount of perlite (10-20%) and holly tone fertilizer for good drainage and soil acidity, which seems to keep them healthier.  I use excess soil removed from repotted plants for garden raised bed filler or mulching plants outside.

They're easy to grow from seed.  I got about 50% germination.  I have a couple trees (not for sale) that made fruit after about 2 years grown from seed.  They're about 3 years old now and have lots of flowers.  I'm in WA and they've adapted well to my greenhouse and summer climate.  If you're interested to see mine, I made a short video last month.  https://youtu.be/ZhjVWqq0J8I?si=twCo85HG4XBDPZhB

Really nice coloring.  Is it pink flesh on the inside?

I tasted some freshly picked cinnamon apple in the Fruit and Spice park, Miami area a couple years ago.  Delicious fruit, to me it had a sweet bread taste, almost like eating a plain donut.

I'm late to this party, but would be interested in a Ruby red Longan scion if another becomes available. Thanks! Benjamin Johnson

No, I don't have more seeds. That was almost 3 years ago.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: WTB - Mature Olosapo Wood

Ok, I will pile on with the discussion and share a picture of my 2 year old Olosapos to keep this thread alive in hopes of someone chiming in saying I have mature budwood of a good quality fruit available.

I'm following this post because I also have a few 2.5 year old olosapos to graft over.

Anyone have some previously fruited Cambuca jaboticaba (plinia edulis) scion wood in the 1/4-3/8 inch range? Also looking for some Achacha or other Garcinia budwood.  Also just remembered I have some canistel rootstock that I need to graft.

Sorry for the late response.  Any Grimal branches left?

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: Looking for Painter Rollinia scions
« on: February 15, 2024, 01:00:42 AM »
Hey Vincent, is Painter's Roliinia easier to set fruit?  I have a 5 year old rolliinia seedling that keeps flowering, but hasn't set one fruit yet.  I'm mystified how to hand pollinate it, too.

I've heard that it's allowed to ship certified disease free budwood into AZ from the CCPP, but I'm not 100% certain.  Just an idea.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Must-have eugenias (based on flavor)

Did you leave out Surinam Cherries?  (Uniflora)  I haven't had the chance to try a lot of Eugenia fruits yet; most of my plants are still too small; but I had the chance to eat some surinam cherries in Maui last summer and they were really good.  Cedar Bay cherries were great, too.  (Reinwardtiana)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Loquat on Provence Quince?
« on: January 13, 2024, 09:33:28 PM »
Anyone ever graft loquat onto provence quince rootstock? What was your experience? Scion and rootstock are highly compatible? Works well together as a tree?

24
Anyone used these as rootstock for other garcinias?
