No, I haven't tasted Oro Negro. I know that it is held in very high esteem among late season avocados.

Last night I had some Ronnie avocado in my salad. It was delicious but the avocado demands attention. The Ronnie flavor dominated every bite and the rich oily texture coated the other items in the salad. While I enjoyed it, I'm not sure if the intensity would get old, or how much a general avocado consumer would enjoy it.

Most people growing avocados are probably feeding a family with them, and I see the clean/classic taste options as the most crowd-pleasing fruit for kids and grandmas.
It's been a while since I've eaten an Oro Negro, but I want to say it's along the same lines as Ronnie.  Carlos, the avocado grower in Homestead (www.myavocadotrees.com), was not very fond of Oro Negro, considered it overpowering.

Hallelujah!  I'm seeing blossom spikes on the lychee tree for the first time since 2021.  Cool January did the trick.  I hope everyone has a good lychee crop this summer.

Classic taste: Nishikawa, Booth #8, Taylor, Reed, Monroe, Choquette
Funky taste: Ronnie, Kampong, Lula, Brooks Late

After eating several more, I have improved my ranking of Taylor's eating quality. Taylor is truly delicious and checks all the same boxes as Hass. I downgraded Ronnie slightly for its unique flavor and texture - as much as I love it I'm not sure it has the flavor and texture to appeal quite as widely.
Have you ever tasted Oro Negro?  Where would it fit in?  Would you consider it "Funky taste" and better than Ronnie and Kampong?  Rich, oily, "egg salad" flavor (in a good one).

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Avocado Leaves showing a brownish rust

If you did nothing to control this, would the tree survive and put out new healthy leaves eventually?  Meaning is this just a temporary state of affairs, especially if you worked on tree nutrition?
Any opinions?  I've seen a lot of avocado trees with compromised leaves in the last few months, including one of my own (Simmonds).  With the arrival of spring, there should be new leaves on all the trees.

I'm glad to know that Monroe is better than Choquette, as I have the tree.  Many have said that the two are equal, but I trust your judgement on this.  I ordered a box of Monroe from Sleepy Lizard a couple years back, and I felt at the time that they were better than Choquette, but I didn't have one on hand to make the comparison.

I can't wait until you start reviewing mango varieties! :)  You're showing a lot of talent at this.

The squirrels know that Lula is tasty.

Anybody that is looking for Reed avocado, Julian just activated that option on his site. I ordered a mix box so I hopefully I get at least one Reed in there.
Now that would be interesting.  Reed is a favorite of our avocado man in San Diego County, Brad.  Reed was grown commercially in south Miami-Dade at one point but was abandoned by growers due to low production according to PIN.

Lula avocados are good in chunks in salads.  If you use apple cider vinegar, it offsets the sweet flavor of the fruit.  Balsamic vinegar, on the other hand, would intensify the sweet flavor.  The marks on the fruit were made by squirrels.  Otherwise, the fruit here was clean with only occasional scab.

I’ve been picking fuertes since December and I think they will be good for a couple more months.

Nice.  Fuerte is much better than Lula!  The first avocado I ever ate.  :)

It's a wrap.  I'm done picking Lula for the season.  The pole was fully extended, and my neck was in pain.

Thank you everyone! Grabbing a few scions from Spaugh and will give Sharwii a try here. Grafting onto medium sized in-ground ON tree.
Bless you, Rob.  :)

Here is one of my CL grafted branches:

I lied, she is already starting up:

My scions were direct from Dr. Campbell, and have tested the fruit.
This is the color and appearance of my Cecilove leaves, even when immature.

Let's keep trying with this one.  I wouldn't write off every avocado that didn't work for Carlos in Homestead.

John -
Are you impuning that my Cecilove is in question due to it's health?
Now don't be offended.  Did you get your tree from Dr. Campbell?

Shape would be the better determiner, IMO; color of new leaves seems to vary based on health/nutrition of the tree (rootstock may also play a role). I had the same variety grafted to an in-ground and one in a pot; the potted flushed a brilliant scarlet color while the other was nothing special. The potted tree died later that season....
Besides color, the size of the new leaves was much smaller.

Planted this Cecilove on September 13th. It's first leaf flush since getting planted. 12 new flushes, 5 more buds are expanding.

Hopefully the impending cold air doesn't hurt these tender leaves.

Where did you get your tree?  The leaves on my CeciLove look NOTHING like that.  I got my tree from TAF so I'm 95% certain it's the real thing.  I hope others with the variety will comment.  I feel pretty confident that your tree is not CeciLove.  I just saw a video with young CeciLove trees today.

Wednesday will be our coldest night of the year so far.  Orlando and Tampa will see temps in the 30's.  Hopefully high 30's with no damage to young mango trees.  This could be the year of the bumper crop for SoFlo!

A tropical fruit forum that originated in South Florida and that also has a strong following in SoCal is naturally going to be obsessed with mangos, and mangos are going to inspire a lot of topics.  Why turn these discussions into a sub-forum?
