Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Potting Soil for Pineapples
« on: March 16, 2025, 09:52:53 PM »
I've been lazu and stingy about fertilizing in the past, but am getting into it lately. Mostly just what's in the potting soil. Sprayed them once or twice with some kelp extract, going to foliar feed more. Probably part of the reason I haven't seen a pineapple fruit in a long time. Time for sun and fert.

Oro Negro blooms:

Potted Catalina:

Mangoes grow and produce fine in limestone with no amendments. Did nothing for years, and usually got good harvests. Soil ph is 8+ here. Now I fertilize, but not trying to adjust the ph. Never bothered, and wouldn't. Many giant trees in our neighborhood and beyond, no one is tending to them. They usually produce tons of mangoes, and are beautiful trees.

Other trees appreciate or need chealted iron. Mangoes do not appear to need it.

Just up-potted these, 1/2 yesterday and the others about a month ago (5g?). Used Miracle Grow Cactus, Palm, and Citrus soil mix. Would've liked to have done a mix like the OPs, but needed to keep it simple.

1 of them started flowering almost immediately after moving into more sunlight. Got about 11 planted in-ground around the yard. Going to dig up and repot, too much shade and not flowering.

Still waiting on mamey. All other grafted trees I've got from Lara Farms have thrived.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Fruiting garcinias in containers?
« on: March 15, 2025, 11:36:20 AM »
I disagree about intermedia. Gives delicious fruit a few times per year in a shady spot. Not much flesh and they are small, but a lot of fun to eat. While I wait on these slower garcinias, will eat all the lemon drops within reach.

7
Gotta ripen in opossum dung, perhaps.

Kesar was hammered by pm last year, mmm4 did fine. Kesar definitely struggles with pm. This year, spraying for the 1st time. Lots of clean fruit on both. Check the TAF site for info on disease resistance.

ST, mmm4, Glenn, and CL are all good pics here in terms of disease resistance, even without spraying. OS probably as well, just getting going good this year.

I am close to the bay/ocean, so that has to help.

Growing 2 of these. Small, won't be fruiting for a while. But wondering, will the heat and humidity affect fruit quality?

Having some bird food around isn't a bad idea. Placed well, you can redirect avian and small beasts away from actual "top flavor" fruit.

Lots of fruit on Glenn, Kesar, OS, and mmm4 here. Super impressed with mmm4, 1/2 shaded and producing like a champ. The least mature of the 4 best producers. Edward, CL, ST, SL, and CC holding fruit as well. Sien ta Lone appears to have dropped most fruit. It's not in a great spot.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Name That Garcinia!
« on: March 13, 2025, 08:38:24 PM »
I think this is 1 of the 3 original trees. Fruiting at under 4 feet, fruited last year but I got to them too late. Fruit turned orange with a small nipple. Larger than intermedia. Thinking this is g. brasiliensis, what do ya'll think?

...gotta get a better pic, there may be 2 or 3 different garcinia leaves in there.

Ordered G3 in January, probably will be waiting a while.

Sorry, didn't mean to poke fun. Vegans, to me, are the closest we have to saints. It's just that I have tried fruits/vegetables recommended by known vegans and none of those things I was able to stomach (like raw moringa leaves).

I don't understand what vegans have to do with ya'll getting bad fruit.

lol, was just curious. Not offended, I have no beef with them, but no vegan here.

Yeah, maybe I'm just stuffing stuff in already occupied pots, but when it appears to workout well for everyone, I consider them "companions." =)

Looks like a bloom that isn't going to make it. =(

Companion plants in pots helps decrease issues with overwatering, which I am guilty of. it is also nice to have another layer of productivity with potted plants.  Since other stuff is going to grow there anyway, makes sense to choose.

Have played around with different herbs, had some fennel go a little too nuts in one pot. Got a patch of fish mint growing free underneath rollinia tree,. Going to take some and try in pots. Loves the shade here.

I will also grow seedlings of the mother plant in the same pot. Cedar bay cherry, miracle fruit, and loquat sprouts are growing in the mother tree pots. When I eat a fruit, just pop the seed(s) in the pot. Works very well, and can transplant later. Miracle fruit does it on its own.

Moss is another one. Fun to add to bonsais, as well as fruit trees. Can be difficult to keep alive.

M. casturi is only worth growing if you have a lot of room, and aren't expecting a whole lot. Very little flesh, big seeds, and plenty of fiber. The taste is good if picked right, but way too strong for many people. Ours fruits sporadically, has been barren the last 2 years and no flowers or fruit currently.

Regular water until just before ripening stage is what is happening here.

Sounds like a sound plan GG! Thanks for sharing your approach. Will probably add Double Nickel next year. Just ordered Milstop, will combine with Cease, and rotate with copper and/or sulfur.

Funny, was about to order micronutrient spray, and thought to check my old storage bin. Found a full little jug and a bunch of other nice stuff had forgotten about.

Seeing lots of clean fruit set on several established trees. Looks to be our best year yet. Another cold front about to hit too. Brief, but wouldn't be surprised to see another round of blooms.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Pink noni first ripe fruit

I’ve heard of people talking about the noni battles they used to have as kids :)
Wow, it is much larger than I imagined from seeing the pictures.  I was thinking a small berry.

Maybe good for hucking at your enemies.

lmao! Tropical version of a stinky snowball fight.

Pretty scary pink fruit!

Our friends from Thailand visited, and were really impressed with the noni tree. Left with a bag full of leaves, which they used to make bowls for a tasty traditional dish. The leaves are what many people use, not the fruit.

My friend's pics, he is a gourmet chef.

My version would look like boiled collard greens.

What kind of loquat is that? Have been enjoying Yehudas lately. Our jak tree is fruiting again, lots of flowers and some fruit set already.

Same thing has been happening with me re pics not loading efficiently. It takes a while sitting on the page. Glad it's not just me, will stop beating my computer against the wall.

I'm rotating Cease with copper/sulfur df. Gonna stick with it till fruit are ping pong ball or grape size. Still have new panicles, a good problem. Tues is next spray day, today and tomorrow too hot, and may rain Monday.

Seeing a difference in fruit set on my Glenn tree, between areas that have been sprayed, and limbs that did not get sprayed. Much less fruit on the unsprayed panicles.

@ GG: What are you spraying now, since stopping sulfur for the season?

If PH is high, rust and iron in the soil won't help many plants. They cannot take up the iron and other nutrients without chelation.

I love science, but enjoy eyeballing lots of stuff in the garden. Go by feel and looks with lots of things plant related. I also trust that other people have done decent science, and can use certain techniques and products with reasonable confidence.
